Thank you all for being soper.
This book exists because of you.
However, my thank-yous don’t end there. None of this would be possible without my amazing and talented agent, Deborah Warren of East West Literary, for seeing my potential and believing in me even when no one else did—including myself. You have my eternal gratitude.
Special thanks to my editors, Rosemary Brosnan and Jessica MacLeish. I thank you both for helping to shape my book into the novel of my dreams. I cannot imagine having gotten through this experience without the two of you by my side.
To the entire HarperCollins family, especially the amazing copy editing team: Nicole Moreno, Rita Pérez, Gweneth Morton, Alexandra Rakaczki. I thank you all for making each and every page shine.
Thank you to Jay Bendt for coming up with such a brilliant book cover. It is everything I could have wished for—and more.
I’d also like to thank Denise Deegan and Susan L. Lipson for all of your invaluable feedback during the manuscript’s earliest stages.
And where would I be without the most incredible critique group in the world, the Tightens. Jesper Widén, Beverly Plass, Alan Williams, Sonja Wilbert, and Heather Inch-Desuta . . . I thank you for taking me under your wings and for always being there for me.
A special shout-out to Mary Carey, Sandra Rubio, and Juana María Cordova Ornelas for all of your support and encouragement over the years—and for looking over all those bad, early drafts.
Lastly, I would like to take a moment to thank all of my students (both past and present) for their continuous support. It has been an honor teaching (and learning from) you throughout my career. There is a bit of each and every one of you in all that I write.
