Saving Serena

by Beverley Scherberger

“Serena was a good friend when she lived with us. I am happy to help bring her and your son back to you. I feel like I know you, too, Nathan. Be well.”

Nathan and Tinami shook hands and in a trembling voice, Nathan said, “Thanks to you and your people I have my family back. I don’t know what I would’ve done without them. If there’s ever anything I can do for you, please get word to us somehow.”

“It has been over a hundred years since a human lived with a sirene, but Serena was a welcome addition until you took her away from us. The two of you will live on in our lore for many generations to come.

  “Now, we must go.”

We climbed into the stern and waved as one by one, they disappeared into the depths.

In my mind, I said goodbye to the dolphin who had so quickly answered my desperate call for help.

  “Goodbye, Serena. Be happy!”

Nathan took me in his arms, kissed me tenderly, and whispered, “Okay, you proved your point—I’ll never doubt you again.”

I smiled mischievously. “Good to know. But now that our ‘son of the sea’ has met the mermaids, how are we going to keep him from wearing a weight belt every time he jumps into the ocean?”

  ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

FIRST AND FOREMOST, I want to thank friends and family, co-workers, and Cotacachi Writers Club members—all have been instrumental in encouraging me and, occasionally, delivering a kick-start to the seat of my pants. For this I am sincerely grateful.

Nearly thirty years ago, a former co-worker read the short story that eventually developed into this novella. Her profound, gut-wrenching reaction made such an impression I knew that someday I would have to expound upon those original ten pages. Thank you, Diane, for the tears you shed.

And last but not least, I’d like to acknowledge the entire team who made telling this story possible. My friend Ted Jones designed the cover and the folks at KDP and Createspace did an amazing job of guiding me through all the necessary steps to publish and fielding my never-ending list of questions.

Once published, though, YOU—the readers—are the most important component of its success. So here’s a heartfelt “THANK YOU!” to everyone who leapt off the boat and swam with the mermaids. May you always have a second chance at your dreams.

  About the Author

Beverley Scherberger was born January 21, 1955, in Ohio, but her family moved to NW Pennsylvania when she was only two. She jokingly says, "I was born in the Midwest in January and never got warm until I moved to Arizona at the age of 44."

A sixth-grade English teacher introduced her to the joys of writing short stories and it was a "love affair with words" that blossomed over time.

She attended Miami University of Ohio at 39 and enjoyed getting back to academia. Graduating Summa cum Laude in 1999, she promptly fled the cold Midwest winters and settled in Sedona, Arizona, where she lived for the next 13 years.

Over 220 published articles later, Beverley has moved from writing non-fiction pieces to the type of writing that she loves to read: fiction. An avid scuba diver, all four of her action/adventure books contain diving mishaps and morph into something more.

"STRANDED" is a full-length novel that began as a short story. Beverley says, "I hadn't intended to write a book. It just happened. When a story needs to be told, it finds a way."

Her favorite parts of speech are adjectives and verbs. She uses them like artists use pigments and brushes, painting a picture the reader can clearly see. In fact, her goal is to describe scenes so vividly that later, a reader can't recall whether he read the book or saw the movie.

She currently resides in Cotacachi, Ecuador, with her beloved cat Squeak.
