“Mm, God no. That was... I don’t know what that was besides... wow.”

Chuckling at her answer, I brushed the hair away from her face. “Even better than that punk Theo James could do?”

Reaching her hand out, she cupped my face, running her thumb over my bottom lip. “Theo James has got nothing on you, Maverick. In fact, he could stand to learn a thing or two from you after what I’ve experienced at your hands.” She winked.

Pulling her forward, I crashed her mouth to mine. “Don’t you fuckin՛ forget it either, Sweetheart. No one will satisfy this body of yours the way I do,” I punctuated my words with a slap to her ass. “What do you say to a quick shower before we order a pizza or somethin՛?”

  “Sounds good to me.”

So much for a quick shower since I just couldn’t stop myself from fuckin՛ her again. But I didn’t hear any complaints about that from her, that was for sure.

As we sat here on the couch eating our pizza in a comfortable silence, watching some zombie movie on the TV, it suddenly hit me. This is what it was to be just a normal couple without all the bullshit that normally comes with my life. And I wanted that with her one day. So much so, that I needed to start thinking about grooming Butch more to take over my position in the club. Soon.

Looking over at me, Harper got a huge smile on her face. “What?”

“Just thinkin՛ how nice this is. Sittin՛ here eatin՛ pizza and watchin՛ a movie with the woman I love.”

“Really? You don’t find it boring with the exciting life you lead?”

I shook my head because this woman had no idea just how un-exciting and more demanding my life really was. “No way. I was actually thinkin՛ that I could get used to livin՛ like this one day.”

Setting her pizza down, she leaned over, pulled me into her arms and kissed me. “I can’t tell you how happy it makes me to hear you say that. But I want you to do it because you want to, not because you think it’s what will make me happy. I would feel horrible if I took you away from the only family you’ve known because you were trying to make me happy. Not going to lie though, knowing you would be safe from all that crap, that I now know you deal with, it would make me the happiest woman on the planet.”

“Well, I would still keep in contact with my brothers, that would never change, Sweetheart. And if they needed me, I would be there in a heartbeat. But you would be the one in my life that will come first, and if we have kids someday, then they would obviously influence how much interaction I would have with the club’s activities.”

Watching the smile fall from her face, she cleared her throat. “You... you want to have kids with me?”

Pulling her onto my lap, I kissed her forehead. “Bunches of em՛.”

  “Really?” She asked, grinning.”

“Really. But just know this. If we have a girl, then her boyfriend is goin՛ to meet every brother in the club and know just what will happen to him if he ever hurts my baby.”

Laughing hysterically, she said. “I’m definitely all for that. But can I ask you something?”

  “Shoot.”

“What if we have a boy and he wants to grow up and be like his uncles in the club?”

Thinking about how I wanted to put this, I sat there for just a moment in thought. “It won’t be an option for my son. I want that family legacy to end with me. But if he’s ever curious about it one day, I will just be honest with him and tell him of all the death and destruction it caused in my life. There will be no glamorizin՛ that shit like they do on TV. He’ll know the truth about what kind of danger livin՛ that lifestyle brings. And he will know about the love of a good woman who made me want to leave it all behind as well.”

“I love you so much, Maverick.”

“I love you too...” Feeling my phone vibrate in my jean pocket, I realized that it had been close to two hours since the last time I looked at it. When I took it out, the name that flashed across the screen had me rising up off the couch, trying not to alert Harper that anything was wrong. “I need to take this real quick.”

“No worries. I’ll clean up our mess in here while you take your call.”

Heading to the bedroom, I shut the door behind me as soon as I entered. “What the fuck do you want now, Dekes?” I growled when I answered the call.

“Mr. Reed. So lovely to chat with you again, it’s been too long, don’t you think?”

“It’s never long enough for me, Dekes.”

“Well then, I’ll just get right to the point. I’m sure that you’re quite enjoying yourself with the beautiful Miss Lancaster this evening, no?”

“You listen to me motherfucker, you don’t even think about her. If you even think of touchin՛ one hair on her head again, there won’t be anythin՛ to stop me from endin՛ you, you hear me asshole?”

“Mr. Reed, I am offended by the vulgarity in your words for me, and here I was calling you to give you a little information you might want.”

“What is it?” I asked, gritting my teeth.

“Well, I was just going to say that you really could use better security on that clubhouse of yours. My guy was able to get in and snatch up my prize with no problem at all,” he paused for the effect he liked to have for his theatrics before he continued. “Have you checked on your club members lately, Mr. Reed?”

“Who the fuck did you take?”

Laughing in my ear, he finally stopped. “Enjoy your last night of bliss, Mr. Reed. Something tells me things are about to get... shall we say, very dicey.”

After those words, the line went dead. “Motherfucker.” I mumbled, looking through my messages and seeing a 911 from Butch.

Hitting his number a few rings later he picked up. “About God damn time you called me back. We got us a fuckin՛ mess over here, man.”

  “What happened?”

“Someone killed Cueball and took Roxy.”

  “Fuck! Dekes.”

  “Dekes?”

“Sonofabitch just called me and mentioned somethin՛ about checkin՛ on the members at the clubhouse. Fuck. What happened to Cueball?”

“They slit his God damned throat; he never had a chance.”

“Fuck! All right, I’ll make the call to his mom. Hopefully she’s sober enough to understand what the fuck I’m talkin՛ about. Call the priest and figure out just what we need to do to have him buried with his pop.”

  “Will do. Anythin՛ else?”

  “Maverick!”

“Hold on a sec,” hearing Harper yell out my name had me opening the bedroom door and heading down the hallway with my phone still up to my ear. When I reached the living room, the breath I was just about to take froze inside my lungs at the sight in front of me.

This fuckin՛ night just got a hell of a lot shittier.

Seeing Skull with a gun pushed up against Harper’s head caused my stomach to drop. “Say one word to whoever is on the other end of that call and I will blow her fuckin՛ brains out.” Skull threatened in a low voice.

Looking around at the four other members, with their guns out ready to shoot, I told Butch. “Hey man, I gotta take a piss. I’ll call you back later.”

“Fuck! I’m on it!” He said, knowing just what I meant by those words.

When I disconnected the call, one of Skull’s men ripped the phone out of my hand and launched it against the wall, shattering it to pieces. “Well, now you owe me a new phone, asshole.”

“You shut your fuckin՛ mouth!” Skull shouted. “You know, I never really took you for stupid Maverick, but just in case you did bring your ass back here one day soon I kept an eye on the place. And now it looks like it’s my turn to answer back after what you did to Worm.”

  Harper

As I’m washing the dishes in the sink, I heard what sounded like footsteps out on the back deck. Turning the water off, I tried to listen for the noise again, but didn’t hear it. Just as I was about to turn around and head down the hall to tell Maverick about it, a hand
closed over my mouth, causing my scream to be muffled when I’m yanked back hard into someone’s chest. “Well, hello there beautiful. We finally meet. I’ve heard so much about you that I felt it was time to get to a look at you for myself. Now, when I take my hand off of your mouth you’re goin՛ to call out for Maverick, you understand me?”

Nodding my head, he released his grip on me. When he turned me to face him, the man before me was an older man, with mostly gray flecks running through his once brown hair, and a mustache that had a yellow tint to it from all the cigarettes he’d smoked over the years. The same smell that was on his hand and had me almost puking when it was covering my mouth. He’s not much taller than me at five-foot ten, but the look in his eyes was so intimidating that he didn’t need the height to make you feel just how dangerous he was.

Looking around, I saw four other men with guns standing in the living room. “Please don’t hurt him,” I begged with tears starting to well up in my eyes.

“Get him out here, now,” was all he said as he pulled me further into the living room.

When I called out to Maverick, it only took him a second later to find me with a gun to my head. “Say one word to whoever is on the other end of that call and I will blow her fuckin՛ brains out.”

Looking at me, Maverick’s eyes seemed to search over my body, looking for any injuries before he told whoever it was on the phone that he had to go take a piss and hung up. One of the other guys grabbed his phone out of his hand and threw it against the wall, breaking it into tiny pieces. “Well, now you owe me a new phone, asshole.” Maverick said in a calm voice.

“You shut your fuckin՛ mouth! You know, I never really took you for stupid Maverick, but just in case you did bring your ass back here one day soon I kept an eye on the place. And now it looks like it’s my turn to answer back after what you did to Worm.” Skull said.

Raising both hands, Maverick took a step closer. “Look Skull, that shit was twisted up in Dekes’ plans for revenge against both our clubs.”

“What the fuck are you talkin՛ about? What, you been conspirin՛ against me with some damn DEA Agent now?”

“There’s no need to fuckin՛ conspire against you for shit! You did kill Nicole all those years ago!”

“How many times do I gotta tell you that I didn’t shoot no jailbait bitch! Besides, what the hell does she have to do with that DEA Agent?”

“Dekes is Nicole’s brother!” Feeling Skull’s grip on me loosen a bit, I could tell Maverick’s words had sunk in. “That’s right asshole, Dekes has been playin՛ both of us against each other so he could get revenge on both our clubs for her death.”

“He the one that killed Worm?” he asked, lowering the gun from my head a bit.

  “No. I did that.”

The gun in Skull’s hand instantly found itself painfully pressed to the side of my head once again. “Then it’s time you pay for what you did to him, now isn’t it? And what better way to do that than to take away the most important thing from you.”

“You need to listen to the whole shitstorm that went down before you do somethin՛ that’s goin՛ to cost you your life and the destruction of everythin՛ important to you.” Maverick growled, his jaw clenched tightly.

Skull began to chuckle, and the rest of the members chimed in. “Big words for a lone wolf without his club to back him up.”

  “Give me five minutes, Skull.”

Staying silent for a moment, I felt a hopeful reprieve at his next words. “Fine... you have five minutes to explain to me why you killed Worm and why she should remain among the livin՛,” but then he added. “If I don’t like your answer, she dies.”

Maverick went through the whole story of everything that had happened with Dekes from beginning to end. By the time he was done with his story, Skull no longer held his gun against my head. “You tellin՛ me the truth?”

“If there’s one thing you know about me Skull, it’s that I don’t fuckin՛ lie about shit.”

Skull sat there quietly for a moment, seeming to process Maverick’s words before one of his men spoke up. “You really goin՛ to believe what this asshole is tellin՛ you right now, Prez? You saw the pictures and even he told you he did it. I say it doesn’t matter why the fuck he killed Worm. He should have come to you first with this matter.”

Skull scratched his chin, “he’s got a point there. You should have come to me with this when you thought Worm took the bitch.”

If this guy calls me bitch one more time...

“Yeah? Like you would have done that had the roles been reversed? You would have delivered the same fuckin՛ justice that I did, and you know it. When have we ever checked in with one another like old chums to ask shit about shit, Skull? You know that’s not how things work between us, never have.”

“Hm, so what do you plan on doin՛ about this Dekes problem?”

“We called in some help from Di Mozé and they have a meetin՛ with Dekes in the mornin՛ to see if we can solve this shit without increasin՛ the body count. I just found out he killed one of my prospects tonight to get one of his rats out of my clubhouse.”

“One of? You think you have more?”

“Had. He killed the other one earlier today when I found out who it was and confronted him.”

Just as Skull started to tuck his gun into the back of his pants, the front door was kicked in and the back-sliding glass door was ripped open, causing Skull to yank me tightly to his body once again. “What the fuck?!”

“Hey! Hey! Everyone just chill the fuck out!” Maverick shouted out in a loud, booming voice as I looked around the room, seeing Gunner, Butch, Roman, Axle, and Repo all pointing guns at Skull and his men who were in turn pointing their guns back at them.

How many gun toting showdowns can a woman survive in one night?

I thought to myself as I looked around the room with wide eyes, taking in the whole scene that was playing out in front of me right now.

“Deviant crew, everyone put your guns away!”

“But...” Butch started to say, but Maverick cut him off.

“Guns down. Everythin՛ is cool. I was just fillin՛ Skull in on what really happened with Worm and why I killed him.”

Butch nodded his head and put his gun in the back of his jeans before the rest of the guys followed suit. “What about his crew?” Butch pointed at the Slayer members.

Skull nodded in return, tucking his gun away once again. “Put em՛ down... for now. Now, finish tellin՛ me just how it is that you’re plannin՛ on takin՛ this guy Dekes out.”

“I would feel a hell of a lot better about lettin՛ you in on that if you released Harper. She’s got nothin՛ to do with this shit. She’s an innocent.”

Waiting a few minutes, Skull finally released my arm and I quickly ran into the safety of Mavericks arms that wrapped around me and hugged me tight. Kissing me on the forehead, he tilted my head up with his finger under my chin. “You ok?”

Looking into his worried eyes, I assured him. “I’m fine, really. He didn’t hurt me, just scared me is all.”

“One day this will all be a bad memory, Sweetheart. That’s a promise I will not break to you.” He whispered in my ear. “Roman. Take Harper to the bedroom and wait there with her while Skull and I work a few things out.”

“You got it,” Roman said, stepping forward to reach his hand out to guide me away.

“Wait!” I stepped away from Maverick and Roman, then looked around at all the angry faces in this room who had lived most of their lives dealing with death and killing others. What I was about to say may have sounded naïve to these men, but someone had to try. “I know your two clubs have never gotten along from what I’ve seen and heard, but can’t you all just for once in your lives put the hate you have for one another aside and work together in this matter with Dekes? When he took me... he told me that all he wants is every last one of you dead for what happened to his sister. He blames Maverick for her being there that day and the Slayers for being the ones who kille
d her. What all this is really about is a man who can never forgive himself for not saving his sister and will stop at nothing to get revenge on all of you for her life that was taken from him far too soon.” Chancing a look at Maverick before I said this next part, I continued my little speech that I could only pray got through to these violent men. “I never knew Nicole, but from what little Maverick has told me about her I know she would never approve of what her brother is doing. So, for once in your lives stop being assholes to one another and help each other out. That’s all I have to say.”
