This morning I was in the kitchen drying off some dishes when I heard the sound of motorcycles pulling up out front. Seconds later that sound had Trevor tearing through the house like he’d lost his little mind with excitement as he made his way to the front door. “Umple Boot! Umple Boot!” he yelled as he went along, causing me to giggle at his name for Butch.

The sound of pipes no longer meant anything bad was coming our way, only that daddy was home or one of Trevor’s many uncles had come out for a visit. Today though, his uncle Butch wasn’t alone, Axle had come with him. Yes, I said Axle. The man really was a big softy after all. Besides, watching him play motor bikes with our little Trevor whenever he was up here melted my heart every single time for the man I once would have told you was a total asshole. That’s not to say he hasn’t pissed me off a time or two with some of the choices he’s made recently though.

Right on schedule, I watched as Maverick slid around the corner after our little terror. “Don’t you go out that door without me, Trevor!” he yelled before catching him and sweeping the little giggle monster up in his arms. When he caught sight of me watching him, he asked. “Whatcha lookinˋ at, Sweetheart?”

Grinning at him, I set down the towel and walked over to kiss our beautiful little boy’s head in his arms before I kissed my handsome husband. “Just enjoying the view of this normal life we have together, that’s all.”

Smiling back at me, he leaned in and kissed me again. “It’s almost as beautiful as you are.”

  PROLOGUE

  Sofia/Raven

They say that growing up as a little girl, that your life should be pigtails and pixie sticks.

  Birthday parties and playdates.

That your father should adore you and your mother cherish you.

That your favorite fairy tale books about princes and princesses should be read to you every night before you go to sleep.

But that was not my life growing up.

  Not even close.

My father? Hell, half the time I wasn’t even sure that the bastard knew I existed. That was until I did something he deemed to be wrong at the time.

Those times I felt the back of his hand across my face, making it crystal clear he knew I existed.

And my mom? Yeah, well, half the time she was what I now know to have been in a heroin induced coma, and only woke up when my dad either dragged her out of bed by her hair to make him dinner or when he yelled at her for whatever she had done to piss him off that time.

But, even though my life was shit, it wasn’t half as shitty as my, big brother, Nico’s life was.

My father for sure knew he existed because he used him as a punching bag at least twice a week. Many times, he took those beatings to save me from having to endure them. He had always tried to protect me and often did.

We used to fantasize all the time about how one day when we got bigger that we would leave this hell hole we lived in and never come back.

Who knew that our wishes would come true a lot sooner than we thought.

Just not in the way we had fanaticized about.

But you know how the olé saying goes: Be careful what you wish for.

I honestly think that saying was created after what went down in our house that night...

  SIXTEEN YEARS EARLIER

Three men came barreling through our front door and instantly started knocking my father around while one of them then went into my parents’ bedroom and dragged my mother out by her arm as she kicked and screamed, trying to get away. Roughly he threw her down onto the floor next to where my father now laid and started yelling “where’s the money!” several times over. My father’s only answer to him was that he needed more time.

During the time that this scene was unfolding before my terrified eyes, my brother was whispering in my ear to not make a sound so we wouldn’t be discovered under the end table by the couch.

But our hiding spot only lasted until the two gunshots went off that killed our parent, causing me to scream out. The man with the still smoking gun in his hand turned around and stalked over to us, his eyes instantly locking onto mine.

I knew he was going to hurt us next.

Crouching down in front of us, still holding the gun, my brother and I clung desperately onto one another. “Please, don’t hurt us.” My brother begged with a wobble in his voice.

An evil sneer spread over the man’s face. “Well, well, what do we have here?” were the only words he offered up before reaching out and roughly dragging us both out by our arms from under the table.

Trying to get out of the tight grip he held on my arm, I kicked my little feet at him as hard as I could, only to have him laugh at my pitiful attempts to flee. My brother was treated much worse, being thrown down onto the floor next to my parents and kicked in the ribs. When he lifted his hands up to protect himself from the next blow, they were covered in their blood.

“No! Leave my brother alone!” I screamed out, trying to get away from the big man holding on to me and save the one person who meant the world to me.

“Sofi! Let her go!” My brother shouted back, attempting to get up and come for me.

“Take her out to the car, we can sell her little ass to the highest bidder. I’ll deal with this little shit.” One of the other men said, grabbing a hold of my brother and stopping him from reaching me.

Looking back at Nico and seeing him lying there on the floor with utter devastation in his eyes as I was dragged from our home was the last glimpse I would have of him before the door slammed shut behind me.

I was told by one of the men that shoved me into the back of the black car that my brother was dead now, just like my parents were.

I had never cried so hard in my life. But what I cried for the most was for the loss of my brother, my only protector, as the car drove me further away from everything I had ever loved.

That night I was taken to a big mansion that sat behind a pair of large iron gates. I would remain there for the next twelve years as an orphaned prisoner... with Sandro Di Mozé as my jailer.
