Reckless Page 8

He doesn’t want to ever hear or see me again, because he regrets ever meeting me. I roll my eyes, frustrated that the thought of reaching out to him even crossed my mind.

I unlock my trunk and try to figure out how the hell I’m going to change this tire. I’ve never had to do this before, and sure I could text one of the brothers to come help me with this, but what I see happening is that they’d tell Pain and then he’d be here and it would be nothing but awkward. I don’t want that. I just want to take this popped tire off, replace it and get back into the safety of my room.

I stand out here in the chilled December air, Googling how to fix this tire on my phone when I notice a set of headlights slowing down behind me. I turn, put my hand over my eyes so the lights don’t blind me. I can make out the figure of a man heading towards me.

“You seem to need a helping hand.” My eyes go wide, recognizing that voice, hearing him speak in my native tongue. “I guess it’s just pure luck that I’ve finally come to take back what belongs to me.”

I don’t believe in luck, there is no such thing as luck, or coincidence. My past has shown me that the truth is that the world we live in is ugly, as atrocious as some of the monsters we know. Now I stand before the man who I used to face every time I closed my eyes, my nightmare – Rafael.

“You have made a big mess of things.” I hear his words as something sharp is stuck into my neck. Suddenly everything goes dark, and the next thing I know I am falling.
