Metternich- The First European
Page 31
Among English biographies, that by Alan Palmer (1972) is the most thorough and, as far as possible, is based firmly on the sources, but it is unsympathetic in tone. Some historians have admired the chancellor (Viereck and Kissinger), others have execrated him (Bibl and Taylor). The debate is summarised in Schwarz's Metternich, the Coachman of Europe (1965) and Kraehe's The Metternich Controversy (1971). A more detached approach has recently emerged, expounded by academics such as Dr Alan Sked of the London School of Economics—who has inherited the mantle of C. A. Macartney. His Decline and Fall of the Habsburg Empire (1989), reflecting the latest research, is surprisingly favourable in its interpretation of the chancellor.
Both English and American historians of the Monarchy tend to ignore the work of such fine French scholars as Victor-Louis Tapie or Jacques Droz. Not only do their books contain much original research, but they often approach topics from a different standpoint—for example, when examining the Metternich-Palmerston confrontation.
