Sylver and Gold

Page 24

by Michelle Larkin

Unable to hold back any longer, the damn waterworks started. There went her reputation. “How’d you pull this off, Lieutenant?”

“All I had to do was show the commissioner your stats for the last thirteen years. They got on board with the idea pretty quickly after that.”

“They’d be stupid not to,” Boggs said. “The more cases we solve, the better they look.”

“Hope you got plenty of rest on your vacation.” Boyle slapped her on the shoulder. “You start Monday.”

“First appointment’s with me.” Marino grinned.

  “Then me,” O’Leary said.

Boggs shouldered O’Leary aside. “And I’m after throw-up face here.”

“You’re booked out for a while,” Boyle admitted. He pointed to the chair on the other side of her desk. It was one she didn’t recognize. “Cap’s chair,” he said. “Pretty beat-up, so we had it reupholstered for you.”

“What do you say, Sylver?” Boggs asked. “You game?”

Reid nodded and wiped her face, but it was no use. The tears just kept coming.

Boyle stepped outside to the waiting crowd. “She accepted the new position,” he announced.

Another round of obnoxiously loud cheers and clapping ensued.

“We’re heading to Foley’s.” Boyle shouted to be heard. “Beer’s on the house!”

The applause grew impossibly louder. One by one, everyone filed out, and the room grew deafeningly quiet.

London poked her head inside. “Congrats, Sylver. See you at Foley’s.”

Pretty soon, she and Boyle were the only two left on the floor. Reid walked around her desk and sat in Cap’s old chair. Mug curled up on his new dog bed in the corner.

“Gold had a lot to do with this, you know.” Boyle took a seat in a chair on the other side of her desk.

  She looked up, surprised. “Yeah?”

“When I told her the idea, she drew up an elaborate PowerPoint presentation for the commissioner. Charts, graphs, current stats, projected stats—the whole nine yards. Half of it I didn’t even understand.” He shook his head, clearly impressed. “Man, she kicked ass in the meeting that day.”

Reid smiled to herself. Sounded like London all right. Her girlfriend was definitely going places.

Boyle gestured around the room. “The guys chipped in on their time off to make this happen.”

“Family,” she said, meeting Boyle’s gaze across the desk.

“Family,” he repeated with a smile.

  Chapter Twenty-nine

Home again and already naked, Reid slipped off London’s panties and eased her back onto the bed. They made love with a tenderness and familiarity that felt magical. Making London climax was her new favorite pastime. The way she cried out, threw her head back, and dug her nails into Reid’s back was intoxicating beyond measure.

Not to be outdone, London flipped her over and returned the favor with a fierceness and confidence that she found equally intoxicating. As they shifted into a slower rhythm, London leaned forward and gazed into her eyes. “I’m in this for the long haul,” she whispered. “You can count on me, you know.”

“What about the dog?” Reid asked. She didn’t dare say Mug’s name for fear he’d come barreling in with his usual grace and gusto. “We’re a package deal, you know.”

“Trust me.” London rolled her eyes. “I’m well aware of that.”

“From now on, I promise you’ll always have the front seat.”

London kissed her. Sweetly. Slowly. Straddling her, she guided Reid’s fingers inside. “I love you, Reid.”

  “Me, too.”

“That’s almost as bad as ditto.”

“What, you want me to spell it out for you?” She laughed, knowing London could take the teasing. “How about this? I’m head over heels in love with you, London Gold. And I intend to make you my wife one day.”

“Needs work. But it’ll do for now.” London arched her back and moaned as Reid increased the pace.

Their passion reignited, Reid readied herself for round two.
