Normally, he tried to hide under wide clothes as best he could, but there was no escape for the ultrasound. He felt strange, vulnerable and exposed, even if only he, Anthony, and Dr. Brown were in the room.

  Anthony stood behind him and held his hand. Since they’d talked their issues out, they were officially together again, and Josh could hardly imagine anything more beautiful. He’d forgiven Anthony, Anthony had forgiven him, and together,
they had a future as a family.

  Ash and D had been incredibly happy when they heard the news. Even though D’s relationship with Anthony was still a bit distant, Anthony’s brother would soon calm down.

  Anthony saw himself as the father of their two adopted children just as Josh did, and the baby inside him was their own child. It couldn’t get much better.

  Dr. Brown moved the head of the ultrasound device over his stomach and looked at the screen. “Can you tell me when the child was conceived?”

  “I don’t know.” Josh shook his head and looked up at Anthony.

  “I suspect it must have happened sometime in the last few months after we mated. That’s all I can say. This may sound strange now, but we’ve been together a long time without being mated and nothing ever happened. So I’m assuming it must’ve gotten possible afterwards, for some reason.” Anthony shrugged, and his eyes met Josh’s. He smiled lovingly at him.

  Josh’s heart beat a little faster as he heard how simply Anthony now accepted what must’ve happened after their mating. Anthony no longer seemed to doubt that he was the father. They’d cleared that up and gotten it out of the way. Josh was happy to hear how easily Anthony said it.

  “Hmm.” Dr. Brown continued to look at the ultrasound image, remaining silent. He didn’t comment for so long, Josh began to worry. Was there something wrong with the baby? “That’s something I haven’t seen in years. Actually, there’s no way you should be able to get pregnant.”

  Josh held his breath. What would Dr. Brown say now? If he said the child wasn’t Anthony’s, how would Josh prove it was? Panic raced through him, making his stomach cramp.

  “This child was conceived through the union of two strong bloodlines, one of a shifter and one of a vampire. A pregnancy is only possible because of that, and the child will have characteristics of both breeds.”

  Josh and Anthony stared at him, completely speechless.

  “You’re not predominantly human, Josh. And, contrary to the usual assumptions, not only humans can get pregnant with vampires. There are very rare exceptions where a vampire does not show itself as such.” Dr. Brown paused briefly and moved the ultrasound wand over Josh’s stomach.

  Josh’s heart was beating faster and faster. What was Dr. Brown trying to tell him?

  “There’s no doubt. You’ve got a lot more vampire blood in you than anyone thought. It’s rare, but it does happen that a human doesn’t show himself to be a vampire. You never had fangs, and I guess you don’t have any desire for blood, do you?”

  Josh shook his head. His fingers were closely entwined with Anthony’s, and he squeezed his hand.

  “It’s not clear where this phenomenon comes from, but these men are able to become pregnant by very strong shifters. It’s almost impossible to find them because they look like normal people. Their traits only come to light when they mate, and you can’t expect anyone to do that just to find out if they’re carrying vampire blood. And there aren’t that many strong shifters willing to mate with humans. But anyway, you are.”

  Josh’s head buzzed. That was the last thing he expected. That was completely incredible.

  “But there’s nothing wrong with the baby, is there?”

  Dr. Brown shook his head. “As far as I can see, everything’s fine. I can’t say anything specific about the date of birth because the date of conception is unknown. I’d assume you have about four months left, since I reckon the child was conceived on the night of the mating. That’s consistent with what I see on the ultrasound image, and I think we can rely on that.”

  “That’s good. That’s what was most important to me.”

  “Me too.” Anthony also sounded relieved.

  “Yes, I can tell you the baby looks completely healthy. Do you have any further questions? I have to confess that I don’t know much more about this particular mating situation because it’s so rare. But if you have any more questions, I’ll try to answer them.”

  Josh and Anthony both shook their heads. They had to wrap their heads around this kind of news first.

  Chapter 28

  It was dangerous, but Anthony had only once briefly suggested that Josh should stay at home. The look he got from his mate had said everything. He was not going to suggest it again, at least not if he didn’t want to cause another big fight. After things had gone so well between them, he’d given in. After all, he could protect Josh.

  He would protect Josh no matter what came, and as long as they moved under the cover of the night, everything should be fine.

  They’d decided to spend two days at Ash and D’s place then attend the meeting with the lawyers, the other vampire kings, and the alphas of the different packs. It’d be the biggest meeting in recent history.

  Anthony couldn’t help it. He was nervous. Even though Gerome was taking his pregnant mate with him to this meeting, too, Anthony wasn’t completely reassured that nothing would happen to Josh. What if someone turned on them and betrayed them? What if…

  “Stop worrying so much. Everything will be fine, nothing will happen to me, and in case of doubt, you can protect me.”

  Josh had, as always, realized exactly what was bothering Anthony. That probably wasn’t hard, but Anthony still felt a blush covering his face. He was about to make a fool of himself, but he couldn’t stop it. Just the idea that something might happen to Josh or their unborn baby was driving him crazy.

  Since they were also taking their other two children with them, the danger was even greater. Maybe he could protect Josh, but what about all three of them? What might happen then? Could he really put his family in danger?

  Was it right to give in to Josh? If he’d… No, he couldn’t. Even if he’d had any way of getting Josh to stay home alone, Josh would have followed him.

  There was only one thing worse than doing this with Josh and the kids: Josh following him alone with the kids. Then he’d be completely unprotected and there’d be no one to help him. He hated both of these alternatives, but he saw no way out.

  “Stop it. I mean it. You’re making me nervous. When I get nervous, the kids get nervous, and then this drive will be hell.” Josh wriggled around on the passenger seat and seemed to try to find a comfortable sitting position.

  Even though his pregnancy hadn’t progressed that far, his rounded stomach stopped him from getting comfortable in any position. It became more and more difficult for him to carry Leon around, and picking up the children’s toys was no longer as easy as before.

  It was still a sight Anthony found strange and at the same time absolutely exciting. He couldn’t get enough of Josh, even if Josh doubted again and again how attractive Anthony still found him. There were no words to explain how it felt to lie in bed with his man and show him how hot he found it that Josh was carrying his child. Anthony tried to prove it again and again.

  In the past he couldn’t even have imagined it, neither to have a mate nor to be a father. Or become a father. Least of all, he couldn’t have imagined finding a man with a baby belly erotic.

  They’d had this conversation again and again, but didn’t get any new results. They had to believe Dr. Brown’s words, and they did.

  “Neither do I, but I see it as a happy coincidence.” He gave Josh a loving look. He looked hotter and hotter as his pregnancy progressed, and Anthony couldn’t wait to hold his baby in his arms.

  Just a few more months.

  The day with D and Ash was just beautiful. Anthony had to admit he’d really missed his brother, his nephew, and his niece. D was about to give birth and like the first time, Ash would help him with his powers.

  It wasn’t hard to miss how nervous he was, which Anthony absolutely understood. Just thinking that Josh was going to have a C-Section made him sick. As they sat together in the evening, they discussed the possibility of Ash helping Josh give birth, perhaps with Magnus’s help.

  But, if Anthony was honest, he didn’t know who to trust more. The man who – until now – had only helped giving birth once, even though he was a wizard, or the doctor who’d done this very often.

  He had no intention of using Josh as a guinea pig but preferred to play it safe, so they decided Dr. Brown would do it.

  Still, it was just nice to spend time together after the children were in bed. Hanna had made friends with Ash and D’s twins, and by the time the three had finally slept, they were best friends.

  All three kids had decided to sleep in one of the bunk beds the twins had, and none of the adults objected. After all, they’d gone to bed voluntarily and fell asleep pretty fast, though that might have to do something with the fact that they were exhausted.
