‘I know, darling. I know all about what happened to Sophie’s sister.’

‘Where is he now? I hate to think of Josiah getting away with what he’s done, but I don’t want a scandal to defile the Tremayne name, for your sake and our baby’s. I know now what Rafe was truly like. I also know that what I felt for him wasn’t real love. I want him to be finally laid to rest. He and Mordecai Lambourne have paid for their terrible crime.’

‘Josiah has been punished too. I’ve sent him on his way, under escort, out of the county, with nothing more than the clothes on his back. He’s a rotten, snivelling coward. He must make his own way in the world from now on, but I don’t believe he’ll do it very well.’

Gabriel kissed Kelynen’s brow, and again, tenderly, on her burning cheek where she had been struck. Then he kissed her lips. ‘Kelynen, I’m sorry for being so distant with you. I want you to know that I love you, that I will do anything to make you happy.’

She took his hand and placed it over her middle. ‘Did you feel that?’

‘Yes! Was that the baby moving?’

‘Yes, it was. Our baby. It’s going to be a blessed little child because its parents are in love with each other. When I thought I was going to die, which meant our baby would have died too, I felt this overwhelming love for it and for its father – you, Gabriel. I’m so glad it’s your baby. I do love you, Gabriel.’

Days later, while they stood arm in arm looking at the tower folly, he said, ‘Do you know I’ve become rather fond of this old monstrosity, where we first met.’

‘I thought perhaps you’d order it to be pulled down. We don’t have to stay here at Chenhalls, Gabriel. Why don’t we move to a new house, or go overseas if you’d like, make somewhere our own?’

‘Yes, why don’t we do that?’ He saw her disappointment and kissed away her little frown. ‘But we shall keep Chenhalls. If there was a curse here then our love has broken it, and we’re already living happily alongside the ghosts.’

‘There are no ghosts here.’ She laughed. ‘Just a happy future for us and the scores of children we’re going to have.’ He looked at the tower, then looked at her and winked. ‘Well then, while I’ve got you all to myself, why don’t we go inside and warm up these old stones?’

‘Yes, why don’t we do that?’
