“I’m going to be the one to give him that justice. You need to back off and let me do my job. Then I’m going to catch you and put you away for what you did to Jo’s father and the others. You’re no better than any one of them.” He paused and realized that the line was dead, and anger coursed through him like a virus.
He glared at the phone and turned around to see Sam had returned and was talking to Milner and Officer Duncan, who had just arrived.
He went over to join them, and before he could say anything, Sam began filling his ear. “Dannie is stable. She was drugged, and they said had it not been for that, she would have bled out much more and probably be dead already. Jo’s still in surgery. I asked while I was back there.”
“Thanks.” Jake turned toward Officer Duncan. “Tell me you found that punk.”
His heart sank as Officer Duncan shook his head. “I’m sorry, Jake. He wasn’t there. We searched his room. There aren’t many belongings. Nothing he’d care to go back for if he’s on the run.”
“Dammit.” Jake had to find him.
Officer Duncan had a call come through. “I’m sorry. I’m going back to the scene. I’ll see you at the station.”
Milner went to sit down as Jake turned to leave.
“Where are you going?” asked Sam, trying to catch up with him.
Jake glanced back at his friend. “I was just thinking. If he’s the copycat, then I should check on Kendra Bodin.”
“What about Jo? You should be here!”
Jake shook his head. “I’m no good for her here. Call me if something changes.”
All he could do now was get to Kyle before Madden did.
