Warren perked up even more then and started telling Anna about the Varied Thrush that had just arrived at one of his feeders. He started going on and on, describing the beautiful bird and all the other birds that would soon be visiting. He probably talked for ten minutes straight. Anna hadn’t heard that kind of enthusiasm about birds since she had talked to her sister, Chela, about last spring’s bird count.

She wondered if Chela and Warren would be a good match. “Warren, do you have someone special in your life?”

His eyes quickly flashed down and his cheeks turned pink. “No, I don’t. I’m so busy with software that I don’t have time for dating.”

  “Good.”

He looked surprised, so she quickly covered. “I mean, it’s good that you enjoy your work so much.”

As soon as Anna arrived back at her office, she told Michael they should have a party, sponsored by the firmware group, for all the project’s engineers. “It would be nice to get together away from work,” she said. “The building I live in has a community room that can be rented. We could have the get-together two or three weeks from now, on a Friday night.”

Michael looked shocked, which didn’t surprise Anna—up to that time, her behavior had let him know that she had no interest in social activities.

Anna hadn’t dated that much, and she still found relationships with men confusing and kind of frustrating. In fact, she had only been on a couple of dates in her life, one of which was with a cousin, so she could attend her high school’s senior prom.

Anna found her officemate good looking, and he was certainly a nice guy, but even if she wanted Michael to go out with her, she had no idea how to make that happen. She was afraid that she would not even know how to act during a date.

Besides, she had lots to learn to become proficient at her new career. She told herself this party was about getting her sister and Warren together. It had nothing to do with seeing Michael outside the office.

He smiled at her suggestion and agreed that a party for the engineers was a great idea. He said they could split the cost of the room, food, and drinks.

That evening an excited Anna bought an airline ticket and called her sister, who seemed thrilled, but being her beloved big sister, Chela also let Anna know that she didn’t like the fact that Anna had spent money on an airline ticket for her. But after a brief discussion, she said she missed Anna terribly and would love to come for a visit.
