“You’ve had relationships with other males, but I’ve never asked you to talk about it. They didn’t work out for whatever reason. Same with me. I’ve had a few relationships, but nothing came of them. That included what I had with Kayley. It just wasn’t right between us. She knew it wouldn’t work because her place is with her people, and my place is with mine. When she left to go in search for a new planet, I was very disappointed, but not heartbroken. I let her go without a fight.”
“You’re not in love with her?”
Shaking his head, he answered, “No. Finding you missing, and then in the hands of an enemy who meant you harm, scared me. Standing by while another had to attend your injuries, feeling helpless was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do. The thought of you leaving here, leaving me, terrifies me. I know it’s been a short time, but somehow, you’ve stolen my heart. For the first time ever, I have considered leaving my home to follow you, and do everything I can to convince you I’m the male for you.”
Tears escaped, and she hadn’t realized it until he wiped them away with gentle thumbs. “ZenIM…”
“I’m in love with you. You are smart, kind, brave, and generous. You accept people for who they are and don’t judge them. Your smile lights the room, and when I’m with you, I am filled with joy. All I want is a chance to show you how right we are together. Stay here with me and give us a chance.”
“You love me?” Jenny asked, reeling from everything he had just confessed.
When he gave her a brilliant smile and a nod, she threw her arms around his neck. Her momentum sent them both toppling. His back on the floor, and she landed on top of him.
“I love you too.”
ZenIM pressed a gently kiss on her lips. “Say it again.”
She smiled and smothered him with butterfly kisses. “I love how protective you are of your people and anyone under your care. You have a very creative mind, finding ways to make almost impossible things work. You take time to help others selflessly, and you make everyone around you feel important and welcome. I think about you all the time, and dream of you. I know this is all happening so quickly, but I would like to stay and see where this leads.”
“You’ll stay?”
“Yes, I will stay here with you.”
This time when he kissed her, there would be no letting up until they were both well spent in each other’s arms.
Epilogue
Two days later - early morning sunrise
“It’s time to go, beautiful.”
Kayley had been staring down the pathway leading to ZenIM’s home. She was leaving again, returning to her search for a new home for her people. Even though a weight lifted from her shoulders, she felt a little sad that things hadn’t worked out for her with ZenIM.
It was her fault really. She ended the relationship knowing she would be leaving, and couldn’t ask him to leave his people. Maybe she had been afraid he would refuse. So, she ended it for both their sakes.
“Did you hear me? It’s time for us to go. The shuttle is waiting to take us to the transport.”
“Should we leave the Colony with an unknown enemy out there?” Kayley asked.
“Katiera and Kiljor have several transports on the way to add security to the Colony. The prisoners admitted their own transport would not stay in the star system long if they did not return. They were expendable. Now, we need to go, and you are wasting time, sexy.”
She turned to glare at the most irritating male she had ever met. “I heard you the first time, and you will call me Commander Kayley, not beautiful, sweetness or any other term that is inappropriate.”
“Whatever you say, Commander Sweet Cheeks.”
She was going to kill the male. One of them would not survive this journey if he kept up his antics. Goddess help her.
