  “You’re all ready?’ Alvin asked.

  “We started our preparations when the King told us his intent an hour ago,” Bloodfist laughed. “Now we’ve hit the button on the pop-up, but all we have is a new one asking for us to wait.”

  “It changed,” Goldenheart said. “We are leaving in one minute.”

  “You four represent our entire race to the Humans,” Mithrilblood said. “Don’t disgrace us while you are there. While you advance deals favorable to your own clans, remember that it is for the greater good, as well. We need as much help as we can get to wipe the fungals off our world once and for all.”

  “We will do our best,” Lady Steelblood said. “Our seconds have been advised that they are taking over our duties for the duration. We trust you not to try taking advantage of them in turn.”

  “Protecting our race from the fungals has been my only goal in my years on the throne,” Mithrilblood sighed. “I know you all have a hard time accepting that still, but it remains true. I could have just sent family members as the envoys, and not told any of you until after the fact, if at all. I did not.”

  “He has a solid point,” Bloodfist nodded. “This is his attempt at showing his true face. Let him do so.”

  “Agreed,” Goldenheart smiled. “I wonder what it will be like?”

  “Not as cold as your mountains, more plant life than you’ll know what to do with, and empty compared to here,” Alvin said.

  “I look forward to it,” Copperfist said.

  “Get ready,” Goldenheart said. “Ten seconds.”

  “For our people,” Mithrilblood said, getting to his feet and clapping a fist over his heart to the four, who returned the salute.

  The envoys vanished, and a moment later, other people appeared in their place. Alvin smiled at the ones he recognized from Green River, Beatty, and Bridgeport. “Officer Goodwill, you and your wife are the envoys from Bridgeport? Justin, Megumin, good to see you. Where is Joanna? Han, surprised it’s you.”

  The newcomers spent a moment saying hello to each other and Alvin. A loud cough got their attention. “I am King Fredrick Mithrilblood, and I lead the clans that inhabit this mountain range.”

  Everyone turned and began introducing themselves to the King. Alvin gave them a few minutes before he snagged the people he wanted to talk to, letting the others talk to the King and Gunther.

  “Megumin, how is everything going?” Gothy asked, giving the woman a hug.

  “We’re still working on it, but we thought this would give us a chance to bond more,” she said, smiling.

  “Justin, where’s your daughter?”

  “With Terry. I didn’t want her coming without knowing if it was going to be safe enough.”

  “Don’t blame you,” Alvin said. “Did your apprentice take over the auto shop?”

  “Yeah. She isn’t as advanced, but she has the basics and can do the work. She just takes a bit longer.”

  “That’s good, though. It means the apprenticeships are working,” Gothy said.

  “It’s good to see you again,” Emily Goodwill smiled at them. “I didn’t expect to see you here.”

  “We’re just leaving,” Alvin replied.

  “What sort of mess did you leave us to clean up?” Terrance asked, joining his wife.

  “Trevill, good to see you again,” Alvin smirked.

  “Be nice,” Emily chided her husband.

  “If you’ll excuse me, I need to talk to one more person before I go,” Alvin said, leaving them behind. “Han, you okay?” Alvin asked.

  “Alvin,” Han replied flatly, “I’m fine.”

  “What’s with that greeting?”

  “I know it’s not your fault, but Karee took up with that… woman... and has not listened to anything I’ve said since.”

  “The psycho whore, Lotus?”

  “Yes.”

  “Well, considering what the last man did to her, can you blame her?” Gothy added, joining the conversation.

  “I don’t care if she wants female companionship. It’s the fact she doesn’t listen to me anymore.”

  “Sucks, but like you said, it isn’t our fault,” Alvin said

  “Did your brother send you here to get you two to stop fighting?” Gothy asked.

  Han glowered at her, “Yes.”

  “Fun times,” Alvin sighed. “Well, we’re out. Have fun.”

  “What about the fourth envoy?” Desiree asked as they left the room.

  “I think she was one of the council people in Ely,” Alvin shrugged. “We didn’t stay there long, so no connection.”

  “Back to your world?” Mousie asked as they walked down the hall.

  “Yup, and heading east. The Lone Star state is next up once we get out of the mountains,” Alvin replied.

  “Think we’ll find another Gate in the next week?” Gothy asked.

  “Who knows, but we both have the Gate Sense power now, so we’ll have a better chance of finding them. We need to get Desiree an Extra Life.”

  “We did that when we bought the room for her,” Gothy said. “Mousie and I are out of XP, or close to it now.”

  “We’ll fix that tonight,” Alvin told her. “We’ll also need to look over the powers you think best fit us as a group.”

  “I already have the list,” Gothy smiled as they climbed into the Humvee. “Okay, Desiree, you’re the gunner for now.”

  “I doubt there will be anything to shoot,” Desiree snorted. “I’m fine with trading off the position, though.”

  Alvin got the Turtle started. “Dwarves, Elves, dragons, fey…Wonder what’s next?”

  “I’m going with vampires,” Gothy said.

  “Sparkly vampires, or Dracula vampires?” Alvin asked as he got them moving.

  “Sparkly vampires?” Gothy asked confused.

  “It came out after 2000,” Alvin said. “You avoided one of the great debacles of vampire history. Don’t ask, you really don’t want to know.”

  “Now I want to know even more,” Gothy said.

  “Alright, but I warned you,” Alvin sighed.
