A Perfect Match

James and Nellie had two children, a lad, and a lass. They’d named the lad Liam after Nellie’s Da, but James had insisted, and Nellie had agreed immediately, that the lass be named Jacqueline. His sister had loved the gesture and doted on the lass whenever she saw her.

Jacqueline and Connor had decided six children were enough, and with Flora’s help, they were trying to prevent any more. Although Hamish loved all his grandchildren, little Leana was the most like his daughter, and every time he saw the lass she claimed a bigger part of his heart. She could do nothing wrong in his eyes.

“Mither! Mither!” Annabelle yelled as she ran towards her parents, “come quickly!”

  “What’s wrong?” Connor asked.

“Eadan Hamish told Leanna that she couldn’t beat him at swords because she’s a lass. She went to get hers and said she’ll show him,” Annabelle quickly explained.

“She brought her sword?” Connor turned and asked Jacqueline.

“It’s wooden, Connor,” Jacqueline said, “she can’t hurt anyone with it.”

“You and I are going to have another talk about what’s appropriate for our daughter,” Connor said, glaring at his wife.

The rest of the McCabes couldn’t hold back their laughter anymore. They all knew who Leana got her spirit from, and they all loved her for it.

“Let them work it out,” Hamish said waving his hand in the air. Then he raised his cup and said, “to the McCabes!”

“To the McCabes!” everyone echoed as they raised their glasses and drank.
