Kaiju Wars

by Eric S. Brown

Upon returning to whichever environment they had previously emerged, the kaiju tended to stay out of human contact, most often for long periods of time. Some kaiju appeared only once, whereas others made periodic repeat visits to whatever territory they claimed as their own.

The truth is, humans were now at the top of the global food chain only when all kaiju were inactive. When one or more appeared, however, the human species — and various sub-species thereof — were generally at the mercy of these titans until they acquired whatever sustenance they sought and returned to dormancy; or the occasions they could be successfully lured or driven out of a populated area. Or, in one case, when the machine which created a kaiju-like entity out of exotic frequencies of compressed energy was smashed to pieces and the creature simply disappeared.

Despite intensive study by a growing field of interest, what these creatures are, and how they were spawned by any type of force either natural or unnatural, remains nothing more than theories, some being more popular and accepted in the scientific community than others. And, of course, the occult and fundamentalist Christian communities had much to say about the matter too.

Colin’s personal study of the literature filled him with an unwavering fear that his home city of Metroville would one day be attacked by a kaiju. These fears pervaded his thoughts both during his waking hours and throughout the night as he slept and his subconscious took over his psyche. They often interfered with his academic studies, along with the boy’s ability to enjoy his childhood by interacting with peers in fun social activities.

Though it was obvious to many in Colin’s life that he was suffering from anxiety, and visits to his school guidance counselor were conducted, he refused to disclose the source of his fears. He felt embarrassed about it, as none of his peers seemed overly concerned about a kaiju incursion.

That is, until the grim day when Colin’s private fears were proven to be well-founded when Metroville actually suffered such a localized kaiju apocalypse.
