Dying for an Education

  He was silent as he pulled something out of his pocket.

  I had seen the box before. I just wasn’t sure if I would ever see it again.

  “I know this is the place that means the most to you. It would be a good spot for a wedding reception, right?”

  “The bookstore?” I could barely even think, let alone speak. I nodded, and I felt tears spring to my eyes. Yes. It would be perfect.

  “Claire, we’ve known each other for so long. In a strange way, you know me better than anyone. And I want to know you for the rest of my life.” He held out the box.

  I had waited so long for the question. But now he was waiting for my answer, so I had to give it. I went on instinct, the way that Alyson was always telling me to.

  “Of course I will marry you, Matt.”

  But there was a text on my phone as we cracked open the champagne that Matt had brought with him. I no longer had his number saved, but I knew who it was. There was only one possibility. Chris.

  It said, “You are making a mistake.”

  What the heck?

  I didn’t know how he had known or what he had seen, but I was shaken. I stared out the window trying to see where he was hiding, but all I could see was an empty street.

  Then I saw.

  Byron.

  And I remembered. She had my number.
