“I couldn’t resist the pun. How are you feeling? Big day’s coming up soon,” Tucker said, peering down at Hadley’s belly. She was eight and a half month’s pregnant with their first child and had entered the can’t-sleep-can’t-eat-ankles-hurt phase of pregnancy, which meant that most of her baking was now done sitting down.
Hadley shrugged. “I’m fine. Hungry though,” she said as she took a few nachos and bit into them. Pregnancy had turned her off sweet things, and now all she wanted to eat were salty, savory snacks, which meant she’d started incorporating pretzels, salted caramel, and potato chips into her bakes. They were bestsellers at Hunny Bee, with customers raving about the inspired flavors.
“Are you nervous?”
Hadley looked up. “About giving birth? Nah. If I can bake for twenty-four hours straight with no food like I did at culinary school, I’m pretty sure labor will be a piece of cake.”
Tucker shook his head. “No, I mean, about the baby being a wolf. I know we’ve talked about it, but…”
Hadley put down her tortilla chip and leaned across the table to take Tucker’s hand in hers. “I don’t care who or what this kid is, as long as it’s ours, Tuck. The best thing in the world would be if it turned out exactly like you.”
Tucker leaned in and kissed her, a brief, sweet kiss that said, “thank you,” “I love you” and “you can have the rest of my nachos.” It really was true love.
