“I’m beginning to realize that.”
“It’s something to celebrate. We have a lot to celebrate, and we will celebrate.”
Rebecca saw the hormones coming a mile off and hastily handed Bethany a tissue.
“Thanks, Becca. Thank you. You’ve been so good to George, you really have. It’s wonderful to see him so happy.”
Bethany glared at her husband. He sighed.
“It is. It is wonderful to see him happy, and I am very glad you stuck around even if I tried to shove you out.”
Rebecca chuckled.
“That must have hurt.”
“Oh, you have no idea. Thank heavens, there’s Phyllis. And Rick.”
Gerald rearranged his face with an effort. Apparently, impending fatherhood could do a lot. Gerald had not insulted Phyllis even once. It might have had something to do with the fact that Rick was the only person in the county who could spar with George and beat him, of course. Rebecca had discovered that a few days ago. She could still feel the bruises from the very light training that Rick had put her through.
Very light.
“Grace and Lill are here, but we need a lot of tissues. Tianna has run off to join a commune or something. She said that she and Lillian are not… I don’t know, compatible in the chakras or something of that sort.”
“Oh. Well, I know an app,” started Rebecca, biting back a grin.
“She must be so sad! I know, I will make a few changes to the guest list.”
Rebecca looked up, and saw George on the second floor landing, and she felt like she could float up to him. When he smiled, her heart filled, and it made her feel light.
He crooked a finger at her.
She looked around. Could she get away for a few minutes without being noticed? Just a few minutes, she just needed…
She grinned, winked at him, and sneaked off as everybody else took care of her engagement party. Rebecca walked into George’s arms, already eager, already laughing, and held on to him.
Her second chance.
Her second love. That didn’t make it any less. It made it right – just right.
