A Conspiracy Uncovered

“What can we at the FBI do to help you? That is the agents who aren’t members.”
“Continue doing your job while rooting out, for lack of a better word, traitors. You should be able to charge them under the Espionage Act of 1917. In that their membership in the organization is against the best interest of the United States by fostering unrest.”
“That maybe a stretch but we can talk to a federal judge and get her views on the subject.”
“Excellent.”
“William, do you have any idea where your brother is?”
“Not specifically.”
“We understand. Let him know that he will be safe at the Dean compound and is more than welcome to return,”
“I will but can’t guarantee he will.”
“His legal name is Walter Sutton, if you don’t know that already,” John told William.
“No, I didn’t know that. How did that happen?”
“For his safety since the Illuminismo know him as Walter Johnson. In his new name he has a driver’s license, passport, and checking account.”
“I appreciate everything you are doing and have done for him. You understand I have to be careful that’s why the money orders I sent are from all over the country.”
“We recognize the importance of you remaining safe. Now, if you don’t mind John and I need to get back home. Here’s our phone number.” I handed over a business card having circled the house number.
“This has been a pleasure. Here’s my number at home. When I get names of members in government positions, I will pass them along to you Agent Wentworth,” William replied.
“I appreciate that, but you would be safer giving them to one of the Dean’s or their wives. As you said, there are people in the bureau who can’t be trusted but we trust the Deans.”
He walked us to the elevator.
When we got to the car John checked underneath for a bomb then under the hood. Nothing.
“Do you believe he’s trying to stop them?” I asked.
“When talking and answering our questions he didn’t exhibit any of the typical signs that he was lying. Do you really think he can accomplish what he said?”
“I have no idea, but I hope he can. Or at least start the ball rolling in the right direction.”
“Junior, we have a tail. Black Chevy pickup two cars behind us. Doesn’t Walter have a truck like that?”
“I think so. What do we do?”
“I’m going to take the next right and pull over. You jump out then I’ll drive a few yards away then stop. Come up from behind on the driver side. Have your pistol out so he can see you aren’t messing around.”
Now my nervousness is kicking in that I must confront an individual who could hurt me.
“Okay.”
John took the turn, slowed enough for me to safely get out, then I stepped onto the sidewalk just as the truck passed me. When John stopped so did the truck, I drew my pistol and approached from the rear. The driver stuck his hands out the window. John climbed out of his car and walked toward us.
“Out of the vehicle,” he ordered.
Walter got out with his hands raised.
“Okay, what’s this all about. You could have come out to the house or up to your brother’s hotel room. There was no need to be so dramatic,” John told him.
“I know and I had planned to follow you to the compound. I’m tired of running and hiding. To paraphrase the title of a John Le Carré book The Spy Who Came in From the Cold. I’m the shooter who wants to come in from the cold.”
“Okay. Get your bag and come back out with us. When we get to the house I’ll call Benny, my mechanic. I trust him completely to bring your truck out.”
“Thank you.”
The rest of the drive was in silence which I was glad for since I wanted to process what we had learned from William Barron then surprised by Walter showing up how he did.
When we got to the house everyone, except our parents, came out to greet us.
“Look who we found or rather who found us,” I announced. Walter climbed out from the back seat.
“Sorry for lying to you all about buying a house, which I did do a little while ago. My brother convinced me I’d be safe staying here.”
“Walter, you’re still welcome as we can understand what you’ve been going through all these years. Sometimes secrets can give the impression of being all consuming,” Dad said.
I wonder what my dad meant by that. Maybe, some day we will learn his secret.
The End
AUTHOR’S NOTE
My primary source of information, specifically covering the before, during, and after President John F. Kennedy was assassinated was the REPORT OF THE PRESIDENT’S COMMISSION ON THE ASSASSINATION OF PRESIDENT KENNEDY. The commission came into being with President Lyndon B. Johnson signed Executive Order No. 11130 of November 29, 1963.
In the course of my researching the assassination I was able to include certain key points into the book. Not only that but learned several interesting facts, which I included in the book.
I have also included information for the point of clarity, with the URL. For information from the Warren Commission I have included the chapter and page number.
Chapter 5, Page 198 When Oswald was taken into custody at the Texas Theater then transported to the police headquarters. Captain Fritz signed a complaint charging Oswald with the murder of Patrolman Tibbetts. He was formally arraigned at 7:10 p.m.
Chapter 5, Page 198 Shortly after 1:30 am on Saturday, November 23, 1963 Oswald was brought to the identification bureau on the fourth floor and arraigned before Justice of the Peace Johnston for the murder of President Kennedy.
Chapter 5, Page 200 All available evidence indicates that Oswald was not subjected to any physical hardship during the interrogation sessions or at any other time while he was in custody. He was fed and allowed to rest. When he protested on Friday against being handcuffed from behind, the cuffs were removed and he was handcuffed in front. 41 Although he made remarks to newsmen about desiring a shower and demanding his "civil rights," Oswald did not complain about his treatment to any of the numerous police officers and other persons who had much to do with him during the 2 days of his detention.
Chapter 5, Page 201 Friday night, November 22, 1963 a press conference which was held in the basement meeting room. At one point Oswald requested “someone to come forward to give me legal assistance”. Oswald was asked “Did you kill the president”. His answer was “No. I have not been charged with that. In fact nobody has said that to me yet. The first thing I heard about it was when the newspaper reporters in the hall asked me that question”.
Chapter 5, Page 200 Also, at the press conference he said the following to the press ‘Well, I was questioned by Judge-------[Johnston]. However, I protested at that time that I was not allowed legal representation during that very short and sweet hearing. I really don't know what the situation is about. Nobody has told me anything except that I am accused of, of, murdering a policeman’.
At this time, 1963, an individual charged with a crime did not have the legal protection of the Miranda rights. That came into being with the 1966 U.S. Supreme Court case Miranda v. Arizona, 384 US 436 The decision held that Ernesto Miranda’s Fifth and Sixth Amendment rights had been violated. (Source Wikipedia.)
In the book Walter Johnson is a former soldier with the Australian Army. From 3 August 1962 to 2 December 1972 there were approximately 61,000 military personnel serving in South Vietnam. Of that number 521 were killed and 3,000 wounded. (Source Wikipedia.)
Walter also makes reference to the Phoenix Program which was in operation in South Vietnam from 1965 to 1972. When question about that he said that prior to 1965 there were operations going on which were similar to the program. The men who hired him to assassinate the president would use that information to threaten him with. (Source Wikipedia.)
Mission Impossible- https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0060009/
In the book I reference
the television show Mission: Impossible which was broadcast from 1966-1973. This should not be confused with the Tom Cruise, as Ethan Hawks, movie of the same name which was released into movie theaters in 1996.
Wrath of Khan and Space Seed-https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084726/
The movie was released in 1982 and is a follow-up to an episode of Star Trek entitled Space Seed. The original series aired from 1966 to 1969. The episode references, number twenty-two, was broadcast in the first season of the show.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
I’ve been an avid readers ever since I was old enough to hold a red leather bound first edition copy of Sir Walter Scott’s The Lady of the Lake in my lap.
So it only seemed natural at some point in my life I take up pen and paper to start writing. Over time my skills slightly improved which I attribute to my English teachers.
My breakthrough came about in the mid 1970’s when I read a historical romance written by Sergeanne Golon, Angelique. This French husband and wife team opened my eyes to the real world of fiction. Stories about romance, beautiful damsels, handsome heroes and plots which kept me hooked. Of course, being a man, I had to keep my reading hidden from others as that wasn’t appropriate reading for men.
With this new found appreciation of the written word I took up other books and devoured them as a starving person would a plate of food. I them attempted to write again. I still wasn’t satisfied so I put it aside for years as other events entered my life.
Finally, in the early years of the new millennium I tried again to write and once again met with limited success. At least now I was able to get past the first page or two. Then, in 2006 a life changing event brought me back to my love, I took a job as a security officer. This allowed me plenty of time to read different genres.
My favourite was regency. As I poured through everyone I could get my hands on I knew this could be something I wanted to attempt.
Since 2012 when my debut regency romantic suspense released I was hooked and have, except for a few contemporaries, focused on this genre.
Since 2012 I’ve lived in central Texas. I’m also a member of Romance Writers of America and their local chapter.
