InkSpelled (InkHaven Academy Book 1)

Emerson and I made our way to Alec Gaius and Ronan, and we let them draw the both of us in for hugs and kisses.
“Ready to get out of here?” Ronan grinned down at me.
I nodded. I was beyond ready to go to our new home for the summer. I had no illusions that they were about to let me laze about for the summer. I knew my training would continue.
In fact, I knew they would be even harder, stricter - they would be guided by the fear of not being close to watch over me day in and day out.
We stepped out the doors to InkHaven, and I revelled in the feeling of the sun on my face.
It felt like freedom. Even if it was temporary.
Ronan tensed, his body going solid beside me. Turning my eyes down from the sky, I looked to the Headmaster as he approached.
“Balance always has a way of righting itself, Miss Shaw.” He smiled at me as he walked away, and I forced myself to turn a smile of reassurance to my worrying protector.
“Such drama,” I teased, even though we knew the Headmaster’s vendetta against me was no laughing matter.
“Let’s go home,” Alec Gaius murmured softly, and I let them draw me down and out of the gates.
“Transport orb?” Alec asked Ronan, who nodded.
“Sure, Alec Gaius. I’ve got Kaia and our things.”
“Got it.”
As the world bent and folded around me before my stomach was left as we shot to the sky, I thought about where I had been and where I was going. It should have been comforting to know the first year was over and I’d survived one qualification exam and a Trial on my own. I opened my eyes for my last glimpse of InkHaven Academy.
I just couldn’t shake the feeling that the worst was yet to come.
