Miri heaved out an exaggerated sigh and walked right through Sebastian on her way to the exit. She shivered and then halted in mid-step. “Wait. Who were you talking to a moment ago?”
“No one,” Desa said. “Sometimes, I just speak my thoughts aloud.”
Turning abruptly, Miri frowned at her for a very long moment. She shook her head slowly. “You sure all this teaching isn’t wearing you out?” she asked. “Maybe you need a vacation.”
“That’s what I’ve been telling everyone,” Desa said. “And nobody listens.”
“Well, you’ve convinced me,” Miri grumbled. “Take a day off, would you?”
When she was gone, Sebastian cleared his throat and then stepped forward with his eyes downcast. “I suppose I shouldn’t just drop by like this,” he said. “I don’t want them to start thinking you’re…”
“Crazy?” Desa asked, quirking an eyebrow. “People have been saying that about me for decades. I’m not going to start fretting about it now. Though I do wonder why I’m the only one who can see you.”
“Nari can see me,” Sebastian insisted. “At least, I think she can. She’s just kind enough not to make a fuss about it. You carried the mantle of Mercy, Desa. Even if only for a little while. Are you really surprised that it expanded your mind?”
“No,” she said through a burst of laughter. “I suppose not. Come, walk me to class. You can share all sorts of criticisms of me, and I won’t be able to say a thing.”
