Gray Day

by Eric O'neill

I am indebted to my agent, Becky Sweren, who championed the book and inspired me to write it. To coax an old ghost out of the shadows is no small feat. My editor, Emma Berry, guided me when I might have rambled and reined in my propensity to sometimes overtell a story. Her editorial skills are reflected in all the pages of this book. My fortune in finding Becky and Emma reaffirms my belief in divine inspiration.

First drafts often miss a few signposts and get lost along the way. My friends Stephen “Kiwi” Roderick and Captain Christian Spain caught my most glaring mistakes and made me laugh in the way only close friends can with their many comments in the margins. Ryan “Murph” Murphy from Carbon Black tweaked some of the cybersecurity portions. Gene McClelland set me straight on a few facts that I misremembered and reminded me that Hanssen at one point sent the entire FBI on a wild-goose chase. Richard Garcia and I swapped stories from his side of the investigation. I never realized how much of a watchful eye he kept on me from his office down the hall. Kate Alleman shed light on my fuzziest recollections. Her laugh is as infectious now as it was back then.

Finally, I am grateful to my wife, Juliana, who stood by me during the worst of times so we could reach the best. We finally bought that piano she always wanted. When I watch her teach our daughter Hannah to play, I fall in love all over again. Das ist wunderbar!
