Tears fell down my cheeks as I desperately looked around, hoping by some miracle that the ambulance was here. But when all I saw were the desolate faces of my friends and colleagues, I turned back to Sean and again shook my head, my denial strong as I looked down into his fading eyes.
“I won’t do that. You’re going to be fine. Okay?”
Sean pulled his hand free and reached up to gently run his fingers across my wet cheek. I had to bite into my lip to keep from totally losing it.
“Blinding,” he whispered, as his hand fell back to his side. “You stepped into view, and now there’s nothing but you. Blinding…”
No, no, no, my mind screamed as his eyes fell shut, and I reached for his hand again. When I got no response, I crowded down over him and kissed his pale lips, then I began to shake from the sorrow overtaking me. This couldn’t be happening. It couldn’t be.
When the paramedics finally rushed in and pried our hands apart, I felt as though they were ripping my heart clear out of my chest.
How was I ever going to get through another day without feeling his hand in mine? The answer was as simple as it was devastating—I wasn’t sure I could.
