Wicked Game: A Paranormal Romance (Feathers and Fate Book 2)

  “Morning!” I say brightly.

For a second, they all stare at me with expressions a lot like the one Ford had when he barged into my room earlier. The combined effect of their gazes feels a little like getting hit by a truck, and my heart does a little skip as I register the combined worry and relief in their expressions.

Unsurprisingly, Beckett and Ryland both look away first, schooling their features back into neutral masks. I’m learning to expect that from both of them, although the cracks in their façades are appearing more and more often.

“You all right?” Remi asks quietly, his brow creasing a little.

“Yup. Good as new.” I shoot a look at Beckett. “Thanks for the potion.”

He nods, glancing up at me and then away again, and Remi looks like he’s genuinely considering smacking his brother over the head in frustration.

“I’ll be back soon, I just have to take care of some things.”

I head out, before this can get any more awkward.

As the doors begin to close, I hear Nix burst into the living room. “Guys, hey, I know you’re all having the time of your lives moping and all, but I’ve been keeping my ear to the ground after our little stunt…”

The elevator doors shut, cutting off the rest of his words, and I wrinkle my nose.

Oh, great, how much trouble are we in now? Do the vampire leaders want our heads or something?

I rub at my temples as I take the elevator down to the lobby. Anderson has to have heard about all of this nonsense, and he’ll probably have pieced together that I was involved in it.

What’s he going to think about my helping to steal a valuable magical artifact? What’s he going to think about the insanity I’ve caused? What…

I step out into the street and take a deep, calming breath.

One thing at a time, Trin.

Right. Okay. Just talk to Anderson about the sins and their redemption and don’t freak out. Remain calm.

Unfortunately, that plan blows to smithereens about half a second later. Just as I turn to begin down the sidewalk, a voice calls out from behind me.

  “Trinity!”

Someone slams into me from behind, knocking me to the ground.

The breath leaves my body in a whoosh as a fireball goes flying over my head, through the spot where I was standing just an instant before, crashing into the walls of the lobby.

Ford—it’s Ford who’s tackled me, I realize—hauls me to my feet and scoops me up, carrying me inside. People in the lobby are ducking in fear and confusion as Ford gets into the elevator, hitting the button for the penthouse, and then another button I’ve never noticed before. He’s holding me tight to his chest, his body angled so he’s almost curled around me protectively, like he expects another attack.

The elevator shoots up to the penthouse with a speed that makes my stomach drop out. Whatever other button Ford pushed, it was clearly an emergency signal of some sort, because we’re up to the penthouse in record time. Ford carries me out as the elevator doors open onto Beckett’s entryway. “Engage shutdown!” he snarls.

I hear whirring and grinding and look behind us to see a second pair of elevator doors emerging, closing, thick steel and titanium that lock into place like the huge door of a safe. The windows all around us turn dark chrome, and bulletproof plates appear.

“Emergency shutdown engaging,” a pleasant and robotic female voice announces. “Emergency shutdown engaging.”

“I set this up,” Nix says proudly, although there’s a note of tension in his voice as the men all crowd into the living room.

Ford sets me down on the couch. “Fireball.” He curses. “Inelegant. Amateur. Fuckin’ assholes.”

“What’s going on?” I demand. I’ve finally gotten my breath back, but it feels like my stomach is still somewhere in the vicinity of the lobby. I feel shaky and hollow. “Is somebody going to fill me in?”

Sawyer grimaces, and the scars on his face make him look rugged and dangerous. “We better hope Beck’s got more healing potions stashed away among his treasure. Odds are, we’re gonna fucking need ’em.”

  What?

I look at Beckett, who looks at Ryland, who looks at Nix.

The blue-eyed man gives me a sheepish look. “As I was saying when you left, I’ve been keeping an ear out for things since we got back because, well, we pissed a lot of people in the supernatural community off with our… antics, you know? Not that we regret those antics, baby cakes, but it turns out—” He sighs. “You’ve got a bit of a price on your head. And by a bit, I mean… a whole lot.”

He hands me a tablet, and my brows furrow as I look at the screen. There’s an image of my face on it—mocha skin, button nose, wide smile—and underneath that, a message has been written in bold text.

“This is being broadcast to every bounty hunter in the supernatural community,” Nix tells me, sounding apologetic.

  My jaw drops.

  Wanted: Fallen Angel.

  Bounty: $10,000,000.

Ten million dollars for my head.

Well, my stomach is finally back in my body now. I can tell it is, because it’s doing its very best to make me throw up. I haven’t even eaten breakfast yet, but I definitely feel like barfing.

My gaze lifts, latching on Beckett’s blazing green eyes, as Ford growls, “Every demon and dark supernatural on earth is going to be gunning for you.”

Nix whistles. “It’s one way to get popular, that’s for sure.”

  I swallow.

  Yeah.

  Right.

If you’re looking for more reverse harem romance, check out my completed series, Academy of Unpredictable Magic. It’s fun, sexy, and fast-paced!

Magic exists. I know—it’s in my blood.

Unfortunately, not all people from magical bloodlines have powers, and at 22, I’m several years past the age they usually appear. So I’ve resigned myself to a boring, magic-less life.

  Then something strange happens…

I get stuck in the middle of a bar fight, and instead of just punching the guy back, I blow a hole in the wall.

So… I guess I do have powers. But they’re unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. This is definitely not normal.

And it seems the magical authorities agree, because they give me a choice: either I go to school to learn to control my crazy new magic, or they’ll take it away. Permanently.

Now if I can just survive the witchy mean girls determined to take me down a peg, the mysterious attacks on students, the three hot-as-hell guys who don’t seem turned off by my prickly exterior, and the professor who makes me long for detention, maybe I’ll get out of here in one piece.

  Wouldn’t bet on it though.
