  Eventually, he spoke.

  ‘Look, one day you’ll be in my shoes,’ said Sharp, ‘and you’ll be telling your team the same thing, believe me. Don’t risk your life – or that of your colleagues. It might be one of us who has to deal with the aftermath.’

  ‘I understand.’

  He nodded, then turned as a taxi pulled up to the kerb. 'Here's your ride – and here's twenty quid towards the fare.'

  ‘Sarge, you don’t have to do that.’

  Sharp grinned and held open the passenger door for her.

  ‘Trust me, I do. At least that way, I know you’ll get home safe.’

  Kay smiled as she got in, then wound down the window.

  ‘Thanks, Sarge. For everything. See you tomorrow.’
