  Mineral – soft drink

  Diesel or petrol – gas

  Take the piss – joking

  Runners – sneakers

  Cup of cha – cup of tea

  Afters – dessert

  Tool – someone you’re less than fond of

  Hammered – drunk

  The messages – get groceries

  Leg it – moving fast

  Feck – more polite way of saying fuck

  Mor ya – Yeah right

  Snog – kiss

  Howaya – greeting day or night, how are you?

  Wanker – fool, idiot

  Aye and Naw – yes and no

  Jumper – sweater or pullover

  Ossified – very drunk

  Lashing – raining heavily

  Telly – television

  Banjaxed – broken

  Wean – child

  Quare – very

  Donkey’s Years – While nobody actually knows just how long a donkey’s year is, it is apparently believed to be a very long time by the Irish! If you haven’t seen someone in ‘donkey’s years’, you haven’t seen them in several years, even decades.

  Acting the maggot – If you’re acting the maggot, you’re messing around, being mischievous, and generally causing mayhem or irritating people.

  Dosser – lazy person, maybe sleeps all day

  Gaffer – old man, boss or sometimes some Irish men refer to their father’s this way

  Eejit – a nice way to call someone fool or idiot

  Deadly or savage – means something is class, amazing, really great.

  Gob – mouth

  The jacks – means toilet or bathroom (fir jacks – men’s & ban jacks - ladies)

  Muppet – fool

  Guards – police

  Gas – means someone is funny. He’s a gas.

  Dote – If someone calls you a ‘dote’ or if something is ‘dotey’, it means you’re cute, adorable, etc. If you’re described as ‘doting’ on someone, it means you’re smitten.

  Stunner – sexy, beautiful

  Manky – disgusting, dirty, horrible, often used to refer to bad food or dirty clothes

  Wrecked – very tired

  Hape – loads

  Bog off – go away

  Flute – penis

  Jackeen – people from Dublin

  Jo maxi – taxi

  Culchies or bogger – people who live outside Dublin

  Give her the business – have sex, “He wants to give her the business.”

  Nappy – diaper

  Knickers - panties

  Black stuff - refers to Guinness

  Knackered – exhausted

  I will yeah – I definitely won’t

  Nob – penis

  Craic – This does not in any way refer to illegal drugs! ‘Craic’ is a catch all term that usually means ‘fun’. If something was ‘good craic’ or you did something ‘for the craic’, you did it just for kicks. It can also be used as a question such as ‘what’s the craic?’ which basically means ‘how’s it going?’ or ‘what’s up?’, or ‘any craic with…’ which means ‘what happened with…’

  Sure look it – an acceptable response to any question, statement, or comment.

  Do the washing - laundry

  Slainte – Irish toast “Cheers”

  Mo Ghrá (pronounced ‘graw’) – Means ‘my love’, for relationships that are that little bit more serious

  Mo anam cara – “My Soul Mate”

  Bean álainn – beautiful woman
