The Zombie Apocalypse (Book 1): Buried Instincts

Kim turned and pulled the trigger but nothing happened. She screamed in frustration as the jogger zombie lurched forward hungrily. She plunged the barrel into his mouth and shoved forward for all she was worth taking both herself and the zombie down to the ground. She used the momentum to dive over the zombie and staggered shakily to her feet then ran into the bushes. Together they pushed through and came to the door.
It was shut again.
“No!” Kim cried out in frustration.
“But... they were just here...” Blake looked around in confusion. The stuff’s gone. They must be inside. He ran towards the door and smacked his hand on it. “Open!” The red light on the door came on again, and everyone huddled towards it. The zombies were getting very close now, and Blake could see them at the bushes trying to force their way in to get at them.
The light went out and everything was dark. The door opened. “Come on! Go go go!” Blake said urgently. Blake waited to one side as everyone went in. A face appeared out of the brush. Blake froze in recognition as he realized he was looking into the soulless eyes of Tiffany. Tears came to his eyes and he couldn’t move.
A hand grabbed his shoulder from behind him and roughly pulled him inside. He didn’t look away as Tiffany pushed a tree to one side and walked towards them. The door closed.

He wasn’t sure how long he sat there on the floor with his back to the door. He was barely conscious of Bree asking him if he was ok during that time, but he just didn’t have the energy to answer or even acknowledge her. His mind was completely empty and at some point, while sitting there, the noises at the door stopped. After being like that for a while, thoughts started to trickle into his mind slowly. First came the realization that they had found safety. It was a comforting thought. Next came grief for those that didn’t make it here. This was followed by curiosity. What is this place? What lay further in? He got to his feet and he felt like he was ready to start living again.
This first area he was in reminded him of an airlock. There was the door they had managed to get through and an inner door that looked just as strong as the outer one. The others had left it open and he passed through it. Just beyond dim lights revealed a set of very industrial looking metallic stairs leading down. He heard some quiet talking from somewhere ahead and followed the noise. This led him to a dining room that looked like an office break room. He peeked in to see Lisa, Kim, and Bree talking quietly over the remains of a meal. Herbie was fiddling with a coffee machine while Cammy was busily looking through cabinets that were fully stocked. Curtis had been sitting by himself at a table face down. Clayton had fallen asleep in his chair. Blake hoped that Kyle and John had found shelter somewhere and could hold out until they could go out and find them.
There was a gentle, affectionate pressure rubbing his ankle and he looked down to see Bob rubbing his leg. A smile finally broke out across his face and he crouched down to pet the plucky cat. Bob tolerated this for a second before suddenly looking off to the left and then getting to his feet and running off in an entirely different direction than where he’d looked. Blake shrugged, got up from his crouched position to see an elderly man standing in front of him. Startled, he struggled to bring his weapon to bear but the damn thing was caught on something. He looked down and freed it, then pointing his rifle at the intruder, but there was no one there. He walked to where the man had been standing and looked around, but there was no sign of him. I must be tired. He wandered a little bit and found a living room with a giant TV and a comfy looking couch. He lay down on it, finally feeling safe. He decided he was looking forward to tomorrow and allowed himself to rest.

And hey, if you can’t wait to read the next one and find out the reasons behind the zombie apocalypse, find out what else is going on across America, and if Blake and friends will be able to ever watch cat videos on the internet again without having to worry about contracting a disease from a walking corpse, considering heading over to Amazon and leaving a review. A good review means I’ve brightened someone’s life for a few hours and knowing that is an incredible feeling. Thanks!
