“Driving will be treacherous,” he warned.

“I'll be okay,” Tori stated as she opened the driver’s side door. “I . . .” Tori turned and

looked into a caring face that was honest and tough. “What you said in your office—”

“I was trying to talk you out of being a cop,” Captain Wills assured Tori. “I spoke a

lot of truth, but I also might have added some unneeded drama.” Captain Wills reached

out and patted Tori's shoulder. “Being a cop isn't a luxury job, Cadet Whitfield. You're

going to get stepped on and knocked down more times than you can count, but if you hang

  tough, maybe you'll make it.”

“In a man's world?” Tori dared to ask.

Captain Wills moved his hand from Tori's shoulder. “In a cop’s world,” he replied,

offered a supportive smile, and walked away. Tori stood still for a moment, allowing the

snow to cover her hair and coat, thinking. I'll come back and become a cop. I'll fight the

system and make people hate me . . . get stepped on and knocked down . . . but in the end

maybe I'll end up saving a life somehow . . . for my sister, since I failed to save her life.

Tori felt fresh tears roll from her exhausted eyes. She wiped at the tears with a gloved

hand, crawled into the driver's seat, and carefully got her SUV moving. Are you really

going to become a cop? “Those are the words Andrea asked me,” Tori whispered, driving

away from the police academy. “Yes, Andrea,” she whispered again, “I'm going to become

a cop. I'm not going to save the world, but I'm going to try to save at least one life . . . and

  maybe save my life, too.”

“There she goes,” Detective Lory told Captain Wills, watching Tori drive away. “Think

  she'll come back?”

“I'm sure she will,” Captain Wills nodded. “Tori Whitfield is a fighter. She's a broken

woman now, but sometimes the most broken person makes the best cop.”

“I guess you're right,” Detective Lory agreed and then walked back into the police

academy with Captain Wills as Tori drove away into the snow. That's just the way life

  was—broken and battered.
