Fated Treasures

Cam had visited while she was in the clinic healing, but their conversations had been strained and uncomfortable. It didn't matter that they had said they loved each other, nor that Fi had saved them all from Joseph. Cameron didn’t trust her and Fi couldn’t blame him.
Fi had wondered if Cameron had arranged for she and her grandfather to be on pack lands as they’d recovered so that he could keep an eye on her? If he had, she wasn’t sure of the reason. Fi didn’t know what had happened to the stones and frankly, she didn’t care. They were back with their rightful owners and she didn’t give them much thought.
What she did care about was proving to Cameron he could trust her and that she really did love him. They had begun to date over the past few weeks, like real people working on a real relationship. Gradually, they’d started to relax around each other and started talking like they had while they’d been in Italy. They had also shared some very passionate kisses that had promised to lead to something more, until one or the other had put the brakes on, so to speak.
Fi shook her head as she returned to her grandfather’s question. “The same I guess. The same and yet not. We haven’t really talked about our time in Italy. It’s like it happened, but neither of us are willing to discuss it. Of course, I blew everything we’d built while in Italy when I grabbed the stones and headed back to America.” She looked at her grandfather. “Which I would do again in a heartbeat if it brought me back to you.”
“Maybe you need to be the one to start the conversation Fi. I can tell he loves you, but I think he’s wary of trusting you. You two can’t have a future if you don’t trust each other.”
Fianna closed, feeling her heart squeeze in her chest. She and Caitlin had talked about the same thing. Caitlin came every day with Zeke to check on the two of them. Making sure her grandfather was comfortable and talking for a spell before heading out to spend time together. Zeke and her grandfather seemed to be building a friendship which warmed Fianna’s heart.
“I know but I don’t know how to start it, Papa. I love him so much.” She was prevented from saying anything further by a knock on the front door. Standing, she patted her grandfather’s arm and went inside to answer it.
They had had a steady stream of visitors since they’d moved in, including the pack alpha and doctor visiting every day, and she had just hoped for a little time alone with her grandfather. She felt guilty for thinking that though. She would be forever grateful to Cameron’s pack for taking them in like they had. Pushing those thoughts aside, Fi reached the door. She was frowning as she opened it. Her frown slipped into a smile at the sight of her visitor. “Cameron. I wasn’t expecting you.”
‘No doubt’, Cam thought as he gave Fianna a nod. Every nerve in his body was on fire with the need to reach out and caress her cheek with his thumb before tucking a stray lock of hair behind her ear.
“Anna, is your grandfather well enough for you to step away for a while? I’d like for you to take a walk with me.”
Fianna gave a nod. “Let me go back in really quick and tell him I’ll be with you. I’m pretty sure he’ll all but shove me out of here.” Her smile was a wry one and Cam couldn’t help but chuckle.
As Fianna disappeared back into the cabin, Cam’s mind churned with all he wanted to say and ask. He’d done a lot of thinking the night after leaving Gerri’s and every night since then. With Fianna staying within walking distance, he’d been unable to do anything but think. Of her, of what had gone on between them in Italy and everything after. Hell, he’d gone over every second of their time together from that first fated date to now. There was no doubt he loved her, but could he trust her?
There was still one thing Cam needed to hear from Fi. He thought he already knew the answer, but still had to hear it from her own lips. That one thing was why she'd taken the stones and left him instead of talking to him and asking for his help?
Cam had gone for a run, letting his wolf guide him and where had the damnable beast taken him? Yep, you guessed it. Right to the place he’d trailed Fianna to. Which was why he was standing here now. His wolf’s ears pricked up at the sound of her return and Cam couldn’t deny, he felt just as happy as his wolf did.
They made their way along a path that led them to a lake, conversation light and almost easy. When they’d come to the rocky shore of the lake, Cam had turned to Fianna and reached for her hands. When she didn’t pull them away, he took a deep breath and asked the question he’d been needing to hear an answer to from the moment he’d stepped out of the bathroom in Sicily and found Fianna and the stones gone.
“Why didn’t you stay and ask me for help in Sicily Anna? Why did you run off with the stones, without a note, call, or text even? I could have helped you, but you didn’t give me the chance. You didn’t trust me enough to help you. Why?”
Fi looked at Cam a moment then dropped her eyes. She knew this question was coming and yet had dreaded it. A painful weight settled on her chest, fear and uncertainty filled her, but she knew he deserved an answer. She loved him but how could love exist without trust? How could he ever trust her again?
Swallowing hard she looked up at him as tears swam in her eyes. “Those I thought were my family were in danger. I was told not to tell anyone, or they’d die. I wouldn’t risk them.” She closed her eyes a moment as tears spilled over her lashes.
Opening them. she lifted her chin as she spoke again. “That’s a lie. I’ve done things alone all my life Cam. So many decisions made based on my own gut instincts that might have been tainted by Joseph’s influence now and again. I’ve been alone since I was 13. This was just one more decision I felt I had to make on my own. I couldn’t risk anyone I loved, not even you.”
Cam let the breath he’d been holding, out slowly. It was the answer he’d expected, but was it the answer he could accept? That was the question he’d been wrestling with from the moment he’d left Gerri’s apartment what seemed like eons ago.
“Fianna, I have another question for you. One that means far more than the one I just asked.”
Cam’s wolf was damn near frolicking within him in anticipation. Going down to one knee, Cam reached for Fianna’s hand as he drew out a ring box from his vest pocket. He flicked the box open with his thumb as his eyes held hers.
“Your fierce protection of those that you consider family is something my wolf and I agree on being commendable. Still, it put much at risk Anna. As I kneel here before you, I ask, not only for your hand in marriage, but your vow that you will in the future, turn to me when a decision that big is to be made.”
Fi’s hand jerked in his, but she wasn’t pulling away from him. Her eyes were wide, yet Cam couldn’t scent any fear, just shock. Shock was fine, he could work with that.
“Anna, I’m asking you to be my wife. My wolf is asking you to be his mate. We both are asking you to trust us, from here on. Always, forever and together.”
Fi’s eyes widened and she moved her mouth, but no sound came out. She hadn’t expected this, of all things, and all she could do was stare at the ring a moment before looking at Cameron. Swallowing, she tried to speak one more time, her voice coming out shaky and soft. “Yes Cameron. I do trust you and I do love you. I. will be your wife and mate.”
Several months later, after both Fianna and Cam’s mother had all but brow beaten him into submission for the wedding he thought was far too simple, he stood at the head of the reception line, with Anna at his side.
He’d been smiling so much that his jaws hurt and the tie he was wearing, he was sure had been a hangman’s noose in another life. All the discomforts seemed to fade away though as Anna smiled up at him.
It was that smile of hers that had him giving a lopsided grin in return. That lopsided grin was what Mrs. Gerri Wilder saw when she stepped forward to take Cam and Fianna’s hands into hers. Cam almost wanted to fidget, but instead, chuckled.
“I told you to be looking for a wedding invite. I’m so very happy that you came Gerri. Please, allow me to present to you
my wife, Mrs. Fianna Bishop.”
They all three laughed and hugged and Cam could no longer doubt the magic of Mrs. Gerri Wilder and her talents at finding exactly what one came looking for. Even if it wasn’t what one expected or wanted in the beginning.
