Archaic Modern Niarg - predecessor of Modern Niarg, spoken six centuries ago. This language uses very few words not found in present day English. By all means read it in any manner which allows you to enjoy the book. Its spellings are at least as easy to make sense of as those in the notes passed by grammar school children. However, if you wish to have it sound as we intended when you read it aloud, please
heed the following simple rules. Do not hesitate to refer to the glossary. Archaic Modern Niarg should be pronounced as follows. There was no vowel shift between Archaic Modern Niarg and Niarg Standard, so vowels sound much the same as in modern Appalachian English. However, each letter of a diphthong tends to be pronounced separately, for example, maister would be pronounced may-ist-er. Es at the end of words are not silent, but are pronounced. Certain consonants which have become silent in Niarg Standard are sounded, for example, the k in knight and the gh in knight. The gh is hard, much like a kh. The gh in thought is also sounded, just as in knight. Remember that Ich means I and should be pronounced to sound like ike. Hit means it and ybe is similar to is and are.

Beaks - a diminutive people making up the Kingdom of Marr, who in Spitemorta's time spoke Goblish-Beakish and had scarcely joined the Iron Age. They decorated themselves extensively with blue tattoos which they preferred to enhance with blue woad stain rather than to cover with clothes. They built wooden stockade style castles atop great mounds and made a life of raiding and plundering their neighbors as well as farming. The Kingdom of Marr made up of an extensive region of fens called Beakmore or the Beakmoor, that were known as the Gobbler Marshes (Marshmallow Marshes) during the Peppermint Forest days, which surround a raised pastoral part of the Kingdom known as Caistealbeak, which includes the village of Caistealbeak which surrounds the Beak Castle, known as Caisteal-Beak.
