Alexander laughed. “I’m careful enough when it matters, Mal. I’m too young fer all that marryin’ nonsense. I’m only twenty-five winters! Let me enjoy me youth, why dinnae ye?”

Malcolm shrugged. “I’m just yer age and look how happy I am with Isla. The apple of me eye, light o’ me life, that lass is. Best thin’ I ever did was marry her.”

“Things are well with ye, then?” Alexander asked. He didn’t mind admitting just how surprised he’d been when Malcolm had come to him after supper one night, a few months ago and told him he had asked for Isla Monroe’s hand in marriage.

Malcolm and Isla had only been sneaking behind the castle under cover of darkness for a few weeks, and Malcolm had alluded more than once than it was nothing more than a little bed sport—but then what seemed like the next day, he was proposing marriage to the girl, after asking her father for her hand. Isla was beautiful, though quiet and shy, the exact opposite of boisterous Malcolm. She was skittish all through their wedding, and even now, whenever Alexander tried to speak with her, she looked afeared, as though she worried he might raise a hand to her.

Something was amiss in their union, but whenever Alexander inquired, Malcolm claimed they were as happy as could be. Alexander doubted it more and more with each repetition that fell from his friend’s lips, but it wasn’t his place to look into such matters. He was the lowly second son of the Laird, a nothing and no one to most people in the keep. His word held no sway; all he was valued for was his skill with a knife and speed on the horse.

“Aye, they’re well. I’m hopin’ for a bairn soon, I dinnae mind tellin’ ye. Been tryin’ me best to get Isla with child before the trees fully bloom. I’m wantin’ a winter child, ye see. Just like I was,” Malcolm said, his face taking on a more serious look as he spoke. It was an expression he wore rarely.

“Well, I hope the best for both of ye. This keep needs more bairns underfoot. Been too long with none,” Alexander said.

“Between me and Lachlan and our lasses, I’m sure we’ll fix that,” Malcolm said, guffawing again, his laughs ringing out in the heavy stone enclosure.

Alexander smiled, but it didn’t reach his eyes. He felt for whoever this poor lass was tying herself to her brother. Lachlan Golgow might be a future Laird with a strong jaw and thick muscles, but he had a mean streak Alexander wouldn’t wish on his worst enemy. He only hoped Lachlan didn’t show it to his new lass. She might be a Sassenach, but she deserved better than his brother had to offer.
