  “You were stabbed,” Abby answered.

  “And you died,” Luc added. Abby released Ty, and he dropped his gaze to his chest and ran his fingers over the space where his heart would be. Suddenly he whipped his head up and glared at Luc.

  “You didn’t.”

  “I made him,” Abby confessed. “I couldn’t live in a world where you didn’t exist.”

  “I would expect this from you,” Ty said flashing his eyes to Abby before turning back to Luc. “But Luc promised me he would never do this to me, ever. Do you remember?”

  “You are the Mistress of this house,” Ty said. “This means you have shards of their hearts.”

  “Then set them free,” Luc said. Abby bobbed her head and raised her arms up.

  “Can you feel where your hearts are hidden in this place?” Abby’s voice boomed throughout the room. Murmurs and shouts came back to her causing her to smile.

  “Then go collect what is owed to you. And when you are whole, I want you to live the lives you want. You are no longer bound to this house.”

  Shouts and cheers filled the room as the men and women fled from the room. Abby’s heart filled with joy watching so many of her kind free to live their lives.

  “Do you think they will keep the secret of our existence?” Abby wondered as the few remaining lingered about the room watching her.

  “Old habits are hard to break,” Ty said leaning down and kissing her gently on the cheek.

  “Are you ready to go home?” Luc asked holding out his hand to Abby.

  “Almost there is one last thing I want to do before we go.”

  Abby, Luc and Ty waited until the last of the men had shifted into their dragon forms and took to the skies. Abby watched them until they were nothing but shadows in the clouds. She didn’t know what would become of them, or how they would spend their lives, but she did know how she would spend hers.

  She glanced over to Ty then back to Luc as a contagious smile drifted over each of their faces.

  “What’s left?” Abby asked turning to Luc.

  “The place is clear,” Luc said. “No one is here but us.”

  “Good, then it’s time to go.” Abby stepped back to give herself enough space to shift. Luc and Ty watched in awe as her dragon form emerged like the beast from one of the fairy tales she had talked to them about.

  She turned her back to them and studied the structure of the house resting between the two mountains. She opened her mouth and let out a stream of fire that consumed the wooden roof and frame.

  Ty and Luc were at her side both in their dragon forms and added to her flames. As the roof collapsed Abby took to the skies. Ty and Luc took her flanks and watched as she destroyed the side of the mountain with her tail.

  With the avalanche rumbled down the face of the mountains, the three of them rose higher into the sky. All Abby hoped was that the castle would be lost in time and that happened would become a great tale for others to hear.

  As they flew back to their home, Abby’s heart filled with joy. Her arm stung from Callie’s blade, but she knew it was worth it. Everything she did was all for her new family.

  She turned her head to find Luc on her left and Ty on her right. Both men flying beside her in perfect harmony. She sucked in a deep breath as the dawn’s light kissed her scaly skin and seeped into her warming the depths of her heart.

  Epilogue

  Abby dropped down to the soft comforter, her legs trembling. Every bone, every muscle felt as if Luc had dislodged them from her. As she crumbled into the pillows, Luc’s hand drifted over her naked body soothing her.

  “Is that what you needed?” he asked as he leaned over her and whispered into her ear.

  “I’m glad to hear you say that,” Luc said dropping to her side.
