With the unforgivable thing she’d done so long ago by a short-rate motel.

But maybe that’s exactly what I needed to do now.

  Forgive.

When Hesse and Kline came calling again, I knew if I’d told them the whole truth about Father and Mother, it would’ve eventually led them to her.

  I didn’t want that now.

Because that’s where I was going.

“There it is,” Tabs said. “Ninety-five Weatherly, right?” She stopped the car across the street from a gray clapboard house that had rosebushes lining the walk all the way up to the front door. From here, you couldn’t see a single thorn on them—just a solid bloom of bright, welcoming pink.

  I waited.

  “So. You gonna do this?”

  I nodded.

“Want me to come?” She was unclasping her seat belt.

“No. Don’t think I need help walking anymore.”

I got out of the car, crossed the street. Limped past the roses up to the front door, swallowed hard.

  Ding-dong.

A woman I barely recognized opened the door. Her eyes were wet and welcoming. Her arms were already reaching out to grab hold of me. Her daughter.

  Safe at home.

  Safe at last.
