True to his word, Christian had granted Atlas permission to start his own pack after he had successfully broken the curse that had plagued shifters for the last two hundred years, and after a rousing speech detailing a new way of living for the dragons of the district, Atlas had ended up with a pack of around fifty dragons. He and Esmerelda had completed the mating ceremony, and within weeks of it, she was pregnant, producing a fine heir for the pack.

The pack were gathered in the meeting room now, waiting for the potential mating ceremony of Josh and Violet. Atlas and Esmerelda were waiting for them to arrive as they would go out to the crowd at the same time as the couple.

“Maybe she changed her mind. Violet, I mean,” Esmerelda said.

“You’re doing it again,” Atlas laughed.

Esmerelda opened her mouth to tell him off for laughing at her, but she closed it again when the door opened and Josh and Violet walked in.

  “There you are!” she exclaimed.

“Yep. And we’re early,” Josh said.

Esmerelda rolled her eyes. His idea of early and hers were worlds apart.

“So what happens exactly?” Violet asked, looking nervous.

“Nothing that will hurt,” a voice said and Esmerelda smiled as Raina walked into the room and nodded to everyone. “You’ll take a sip of truth serum and then I’ll ask you a few questions and then we’ll decide whether or not the mating ceremony can go ahead.”

Violet nodded but she looked nervous. Josh squeezed her hand.

“Relax,” he said. “It’ll be fine. They only do this to be sure that you know what becoming a dragon entails and that you really want to do it.”

“Well, then I’ll be fine because I want this more than anything,” Violet said.

She beamed up at Josh and Esmerelda could see the love shining between them. She didn’t think they needed the truth serum to see that this relationship was for real, but doing it for any couple that involved a human stopped anyone thinking they were being treated unfairly.

Raina had campaigned for this and had her idea approved. Now that Matchmakers were no more and shifters could have female children, there was no need for humans to be drafted into the packs at all, but they all accepted that sometimes, it was meant to be, and Raina had suggested that if a human could swallow truth serum and still want to go ahead with the ceremony, then it could happen.

It meant that never again would anyone be forced into a mating they didn’t want—a life they didn’t want. And it meant that true mates still got to be together. Esmerelda was glad for that. She knew how much finding her one true mate had changed her life for the better, and she thought that everyone deserved that chance—a chance to be as happy as she was now.
