  ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

I’d like to thank my liver for its tireless optimism, help and support. I couldn’t have done it without you. I am grateful to Bee for her belief and encouragement when mine waned, along with her recipe testing skills that made it especially fun when it could have simply been more work. Thanks to everyone at Weldon Owen for making the book a reality and visually appealing and grammatically correct, in particular Bridget Fitzgerald, Marisa Kwek, Jennifer Durant, Mariah Bear, and Ian Cannon. The title couldn’t have happened without the cooperation of all the members of the USBG who took time out of their busy schedules to share their knowledge, recipes, and skills. Also at the USBG, I need to recognize Alexandra Williams, Aaron Gregory Smith, and David Nepove for facilitating the connection to the thousands of members. Photographers John Lee and Valter Fabiano were amazing, making the book come to life. Finally, I’d like to thank Lance Winters for letting me steal some of his jokes.

  ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Growing up, Lou Bustamante wanted to be a “mad scientist,” working in a lab filled with alchemical devices, bubbling beakers, and tesla coils. Naturally, this led him into the liquor business, where concocting magical tonics and distillates using arcane machines is standard.

A spirits professional who has filled a considerable number of roles within the industry, Lou has done everything from working at a distillery, bartending, teaching cocktail classes, designing whiskey labels, to developing recipes and products and importing 20 tons of whole cooked agave pinas from Tequila, Mexico.

He has also served on the San Francisco Chapter’s elected council of the USBG as Secretary and Treasurer, and been an active member for many years.

He has written about bars, restaurants, and spirits for Wine & Spirits Magazine, The San Francisco Chronicle, Tasting Table, Thrillist, and SF Weekly, among others.

On average, he tastes some 500 cocktails a year, and has only occasionally ended up hungover.
