“That’s good. Let’s go eat.” They began walking toward the door.

“Over breakfast we can talk about how I’m thinking of moving to Miami,” Mike said.

Kerry paused as they stepped out into the street together. “Really? Would you do that for me?”

“Maybe.” Mike shrugged. “If I moved to Miami it just might be the end of Billy Knight. I could retire from porn, from hustling.”

Kerry touched his arm. “I won’t lie, Mike. I’d like it if you did. But you know you don’t have to. Not for me. I figure Mike Dudley and Billy Knight are sort of a package deal.”

Mike shook his head. “None of it would be for you. It would be for me. I want to do something different. I could be a personal trainer. I could train all the hot muscle guys of Miami.”

“They’d love you. You could easily do that. You could do anything. But I just want to be around you. I don’t care what you do for money. Seriously.”

  “Around me?”

  “You know. With you.”

Kerry put his arm around Mike, and they started walking toward the car. The day was bright and sunny, the sky perfectly clear. Mike looked up as a gentle breeze came by.

Although they were miles away from it, Mike swore he could smell the sea.

  55. An Old Routine

SASHA TOOK HER place in the dark, quietly straightening a timeworn gingham dress. On her head she wore a faded red cowgirl hat and on her feet, her old red cowgirl boots. The costume was over sixteen years old now, but up on stage she was certain that nobody could tell.

Finally the lights came up, and she was alone on stage. She felt the warmth of the spotlight frame her face. When the music started she began to sing, in her own voice, words she’d either sung or pretended to sing many times before. It was Patsy Cline’s “Crazy.”

There were no melodramatic gestures this time. She no longer twirled her finger around her ear and rolled her eyes every time she said the word ‘crazy.’ She sounded incredibly sad. Her voice wrapped around the words and held them close. The old disco ball turned slow blue points of light around the room.

She did not feel like looking for a cute young man for the end of the song. She just sang. But then, by chance, she noticed somebody standing up in front, to the right. He had sandy brown hair, like her Billy did. She turned away from him and sang out to the crowd.

She reached her hand out, up toward the spotlight, then down, and she placed it on the side of her face. When she came to the last lines of the song, she turned quickly and looked at the one with the sandy brown hair. He was not her Billy but he was, she had to admit, very, very cute.

Could it work with this one? This time? Would it work if she tried it again? Should she? She pointed at him on the last word of the song and blew him a big, fat kiss.

Much to her delight, he looked up at her, and he smiled.

  Moon Over Martinborough

From Michigan to the Wairarapa... How an American city boy became a Kiwi farmer

  By Jared Gulian

Published by Random House New Zealand

The hilarious tale of how two American city boys learn to become olive farmers on a lifestyle block in New Zealand.

For Jared Gulian, leaving the United States and coming to tiny Wellington, New Zealand, was a big enough switch from the bright lights of big cities. So when his partner decided they just had to buy a rundown olive orchard in the Wairarapa, it was almost too much to cope with.

First they'd have to drive over the dangerous Rimutaka range road to get there, and he was terrified of heights. And second, they'd have to figure out what on earth you do with 500 olive trees that hadn't been pruned for years, a geriatric rooster, warring hens, an obese kunekune pig, cast sheep, marauding cattle and understanding your neighbors when they said "yiece' but meant 'yes'.

In this endearing, hilarious, wry and warm-hearted book, Jared Gulian describes the first four years of their new life in the country, its disasters and small triumphs, its surprises and pleasures. But most of all he describes the warmth of the local community that welcomed him, saved him from certain peril, taught him how to cook, how to care for animals, and how to understand and love the land.
