Day of Execution

by Lily Luchesi

Sean felt a little guilty as he stepped up to speak at the Catholic Cemetery where Danny and Angie had been laid to rest, side-by-side, together even in death. The cemetery was crowded, as people from all over the world had come to pay their last respects to the woman who had given them safety, had given them a new way of living, and the man she had chosen to rule at her side.

He saw Mahon Quinn, the leader of the UK branch of the PID, and Inspector George Linwood, along with the Coven King for the United Kingdom, and his teenage daughter. PID leaders from the world over all stood in a cluster, unable to believe that Angelica Cross was really dead this time.

Sean stepped up to where the priest had recently vacated and said, “We have just lost not only two true heroes, but also the entire species of vampires along with them. While I don’t know what was going on in Angelica’s head, I do know that she did what she did for the best of everyone here.

“There was a disease spreading among vampires, one of lust and greed and evil, and she saw it despite her best efforts to stop it. And she did what she needed to, to ensure that everyone else could be safe.

“Because that was Angelica Cross — Angelica Mancini — to a T. The hero who gave up everything just to save the world. I don’t know how to carry on without her, but I do know that we have to. Because in dying, she left us her baby, she left us in charge of the wellbeing of seven billion humans. And I for one will never let her down.”

  Somewhere beyond

Azrael and Michael sat, staring out over the cemetery scene.

“You know what’s coming, Michael,” Azrael said in an accusatory tone. “How could you have let them die? Especially her?”

Michael turned his cold silver eyes on his little brother and said, “Because death is not the end. You of all people should know that.”
