Kill Shot

“They look hungry. Why don’t we step back for a second and get them some food.” Dyani and Dale stand at my suggestion. She offers the hint of a smile, and she looks almost as relieved as I feel at the pause in tension.

As they walk away, I wave Grey and Charlie over to us and turn back to the table. I know they are already up to speed; I saw them listening as everyone spoke.

One by one, the men and women along the wall move into the bar and take seats around some of the empty tables. Only a couple stay standing by the door.

“We don’t have enough time to discuss this at length.” Everyone around the table leans in, and I hear the scraping of a chair being pulled up as Dale joins us from the other side of Dana.

“I want to help. Actually, most of us will want in.” He tilts his head toward his friends at the back of the old barn. “Kaley’s grandfather was one of our own. May he rest in peace. She was all he had. Tell us what you need.”

The roots in this town run deep, and that just leaves our group. A covert security team who, until now, has operated within the confines of the laws set out for us. Most of the guys who work with us have a score to settle with Matteo Sparr and his family.

“The decisions made here are not to be taken lightly.” Logan squares his attention on Dana as a warning before continuing, “On the other hand, we don’t have the luxury of time to decide what we are going to do. Kaley has been taken, and this affects one of our own.” He pauses, and Dana nods before she catches herself and stills at Logan’s implication. I reach across her lap, cover her hand with my own, and give it a squeeze. She is one of our team. “We also have a rare opportunity to be a part of the end that the Sparrs so richly deserve. That being said, the decisions will be individual, and they will not be held against any of us. Those who—”

A sharp blast from outside the barn is our only warning before the doors shred open in a flash of light and fire, and the two people nearest to the exit are blown into the room. The pressure from the blast knocks everyone over and onto the floor.

The air turns thick, and I struggle to breathe with the taste of dirt and scorched metal filling my airway as bright spots fill my vision. I fist my fingers; Dana’s hand is no longer in my own, and I reach further to my right, where she sat only a second ago, but I touch the empty floor beside me. Smoke fills the room, distorting shadows as sounds of groans and cries fill my ringing ears.

Grabbing onto the overturned table in front of me, I pull myself up in time to see someone run into the barn through the gaping hole where the door used to be before a second detonation screams into the night.

  THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT.

  Acknowledgments

I wrote this book during the first year of the COVID pandemic. While we stayed apart for a lot of this time, my mother was a constant encouragement to keep on writing. While I’m positive it’s because she just wanted to know what happened next, the motivation was still appreciated.

Thank you to my initial readers and to those who offered specific feedback on technical details. I appreciate your support and expertise. Thank you, for your time and for providing such valuable feedback.

And thank you for taking the time to read the second part of my story.
