Practically Angels

As the sun set, Zane and I found ourselves on a blanket, far down the beach, away from the flashing carnival lights and jovial crowd. Like the pull of the rolling waves, I knew our kissing and touching would soon take us to another place. For the time being, I was able to steer away Zane’s advances and my own impulses. How long that would last was another mystery. One to be solved at a much later date.
Rolling on top of him, I kissed him. And I mean wildly. His hands slid up the backs of my thighs, but I brushed him away and sat up on top of him. I was wearing his old flannel shirt, the same one he loaned me the first night we met. I returned the hem of my dress to its proper place as I stood up. Tossing the shirt onto his chest, I smiled and turned a memorable part of our first meeting back on him.
Zane cocked his head and asked, “Not cold anymore? Don’t you want it?”
“No. Keep it until I come by and pick you up,” I said.
“Pick me up?” he asked, looking a bit perplexed.
“Yeah. You know, go for a ride. Dinner. Maybe more… probably more,” I said, repeating his lame pickup line from that fateful night. Tossing my hair aside, I left him panting and I returned to the carnival with a smile on my face.
There would be time enough for Zane later.
For the moment, I had a Ferris wheel to ride with my best friends.
