  A Letter from Karen

  To my lovely readers,

  I want to say a huge thank you for reading my book. I really appreciate your support and I hope you enjoyed reading Meg and Sally’s story as much as I enjoyed writing it.   The seeds of this story were sown when I read an article about the number of older women who felt trapped because they were no longer in love with their husbands, that they were living their lives on autopilot, going through the motions, doing what was expected of them but not what they wanted to do, how they were screaming inside to be free but that they didn’t have a good enough reason to leave because their husbands hadn’t really done anything wrong. It was this, and the many women’s comments supporting and identifying with the piece, that inspired the character of Sally. Meg and Oliver’s story was inspired by a piece I read about a man who had never felt loved as a child so was scared to be a father himself, and he had chosen to have a vasectomy to make sure he never had children.

  If you’ve read any of my other books, you will know that Cornwall is one of my favourite places, having lived there for many years myself, so I couldn’t resist setting the story down there again. Cornwall is such a beautiful place, whatever the season.

  If you did enjoy reading my book, I wonder if you could spare the time to write a review for me. I’d love to hear what you think. It doesn’t have to be a long one, and I’d be very grateful as reviews make such a difference helping new readers to discover my books for the first time.

  I love hearing from my readers too, so do get in touch on my Facebook page, through Twitter, Goodreads or my website. I always answer every message I receive.

  Thank you again for choosing my book to read.

  Love,

  Karen xx

  The Year of Starting Over

  Get it here!

  What if – to find yourself – you had to run away?

  * * *

  Last year was meant to be when Holly got her happy-ever-after. But stuck in a job that’s going nowhere, and a relationship that feels more like it’s going backwards… this year Holly has decided it’s time to change her life. She just has to:

  End the relationship with the commitment-phobic boyfriend

  Go on a proper adventure

  Learn to be herself again

  Definitely, categorically not fall in love.

  Cramming her belongings into her little yellow Mini, Holly drives on to a ferry bound to Spain, to stay at a remote farmhouse near a beautiful village in the Andalusian hills.

  * * *

  But the day she arrives she nearly crashes her car into a gorgeous guy on a motorbike. He’s called Matias and their paths keep crossing, much to Holly’s irritation. Because as she learns to speak Spanish from the locals, finally starts laying out plans for her own design business, and sips sangria in the sunlit village square, Holly is beginning to remember who she is and what she wants.

  * * *

  So she won’t allow herself be distracted by Matias. Because this year – for Holly – there are more important things in life than love. And she won’t let yet another bad relationship ruin everything… will she?

  * * *

  A moving and uplifting romantic comedy about living each moment and learning to trust yourself again, for fans of Jenny Hale, Debbie Macomber, and Sophie Kinsella.

  Acknowledgements

  There are several people who have made writing this book possible. First, my husband Dave, who always believes in me even when I don’t believe in myself and understands that I completely lose track of time – and everything else – when I’m in my writing world. My four daughters, Julie, Michelle, Lucie and Naomi (who has two house bunnies and patiently answered my many questions about them) for being supportive of my work and providing me with lots of inspiration.

  I will be eternally grateful to my fabulous editor Isobel Akenhead, for asking me to join the Bookouture team, for seeing the gems in the rough drafts I send her, and for helping me make my stories shine, to DeAndra Lupu for her excellent copy-editing, and Alexandra Holmes, Becca Allen and all the Bookouture team. Also to the dynamic marketing duo that is Kim Nash and Noelle Holten, for the wonderful support and promotion they do for us authors and for making the Bookouture Author Facebook page such a fun place to hang out.

  Thank you to my fantastic Facebook author friends, in particular the members of the Romantic Novelists’ Association, for their advice, support, laughs and assurance that I’m no crazier than any other author. And special thanks to Lyn Fegan for giving me advice on naming ceremonies and checking the final scene for me.

  A special mention to Helen Bushell who entered a raffle to raise funds for Acorns Children’s Hospice, and won the prize for her name to be used as one of the characters in this book. Obviously, this character is completely fictional.

  Finally, as always, a massive thank you to my readers for buying my books, taking the time to message me, write reviews and spur me on to write more stories. And to the many reviewers and bloggers who are kind enough to give me space on their blogs, take part in my blog tours and help promote my books. Much love to you all. Xx
