The Ghost Who Was Says I Do
Page 27
“Oh my…” Danielle muttered, reverently taking the locket in one hand. With her right thumb she gently stroked the gold metal. It looked exactly like the heart locket from her dream. “This is perfect.”
“Danielle, don’t cry!” Lily scolded. “You’re going to ruin your makeup! Chief, you made her cry!”
“That’s okay, Lily.” Tears slid down Danielle’s face. “I can redo my makeup.”
The wedding started exactly at three. The chairs had been arranged as they had been for Lily and Ian’s wedding. All the guests were seated as the guitarist began playing. Sadie came down the staircase first, the basket of flowers dangling from her mouth as her tail wagged.
As Walt had predicted, Sadie repeated the performance from the night before, but what he had not anticipated was Max, who joined Sadie midway down the staircase, the pair walking side by side to the first-floor landing. When they arrived at Ian and Walt, the cat and dog sat at attention, as if the entire thing had been perfectly choreographed. The fact the cat and dog sat at attention for the entire ceremony would be a story told and retold for years to come in Frederickport.
Walt didn’t think too much about Max joining Sadie; his full attention was on the bride coming down the staircase. His heart swelled at the sight of her, ravishingly feminine while at the same time bold, stubborn, and fiercely loyal. He remembered being attracted to her the first time they had met, in spite of the fact he believed her to be a burglar. Even when he had insisted she leave that day, he had wanted her to stay. She had been the woman who threw open the parlor windows and let him smell the ocean breeze again. Without her he would never have had the courage—or desire—to take his second chance. She was truly his life.
For Danielle it was all a blur—a magical wonderful blur.
“You may kiss the bride,” Danielle finally heard Ian say.
Before all their friends, Walt took Danielle in his arms and kissed her. When the kiss ended, but the embrace did not, Danielle whispered in Walt’s ear, “Lily was right. This was the perfect wedding.”
