She’d escaped with her girlfriends while Wyatt pulled himself out of the pool. Grabbed a towel, scrubbed his hair dry, and unbuttoned his shirt to flap in the wind.
Then he’d stalked off the patio and onto the beach before he did something he’d regret. Cooled down in the dark shadows.
Now he looked at Deke grinning at him.
“Loosen up, bro. I don’t know what you’re so wound up about, but you’re all dark and moody since the Cup. So you missed the season-winning shot. No biggie.”
Wyatt raised an eyebrow.
“Or is it that girl that has you all dark and edgy? The one online who isn’t talking to you?”
“How do you know about her?”
“Kittycat1? Uh, roomies. I see you after games logging onto the Blue Ox forum. Has online girl gone dark?”
Wyatt lifted a shoulder.
“Dude. You need a girl IRL. It doesn’t have to be serious. You don’t have to fall in love…just have a little fun. You remember fun, right?”
“Actually—”
“Oh, wait. I forgot who I was talking to.” Deke got up. “Okay, bro, sit out here and dream of Kittycat1. The pool is calling me.”
“We have an early meeting about the Russia trip in the morning,” Wyatt said.
“I’ll be there, boss.”
Deke padded away, across the sand.
And Kittycat1 sat down next to Wyatt, her short red hair blowing in the wind, smelling of Montana wildflowers and sweet summer nights.
“Hey, number one,” she said quietly.
“Hey, Coco.”
“I’m still yours.”
He drew in a line in the sand. The water rushed up and touched his toes, filling it in.
“Are you?”
He leaned back into the sand, staring at the sky, the wash of stars blinking at him.
I found a love for me…
I found a girl...
He was going to Russia. And one way or another, he was coming home with an answer.

Let’s face it—we’ve all made some pretty big mistakes, heard some pretty big lies that make us feel inadequate, but the biggest is…that we are in this alone.
That, at the end of the day, we’ve failed God enough to turn his back on us. And to get his attention, well, we have to be good enough.
Keep working, keep striving and he’ll finally say, (reluctantly) I got your back.
What. A. Lie.
But we’re soooo good at believing this lie. We roll up our sleeves, dig in and then look over our shoulder and say, “Hey God, look at how hard I’m working. Can you help me? (Pretty please?)
But what if God wasn’t behind us, but in front of us, in front of our dreams (because, hello, he often puts those dreams in our hearts), making a way for them not because we deserve it…but because he just delights in us.
What? God, delighting in me?
That’s a tough concept. After all, we know ourselves. I mean, we know.
But, so does He. And yes, he still delights in us. Like you delight in your children even though you, too, know.
And if we were honest with ourselves, and reallylooking, we’d see that God has shown up. Over and over. Especially when we don’t deserve it.
Because He’s very very interested in showing us how much he loves us. Which means the more we don’t deserve it, the more realize we need help, the more he gets to wow us.
And wow, does he wow us!
Ford is a very, very capable man. But like so many of us, he’s a lone wolf who has great ideas…and gets into great trouble because of it. He needed to see that God was not only on his team, but went before him, even when he did crazy things.
And Scarlett—awesome, brave Scarlett—hides a deeply broken heart. It broke my heart when she said, “I don’t know what I have to do—or be—to matter to God. So, it’s easier to believe that He simply didn’t care—or didn’t exist—than to come to the realization that I don’t matter.”
Friends. You matter. You so matter.
I know you feel rejected. That, to put in Scarlett’s words, “The last thing she needed was God deciding if she was worth saving or not. She’d bet she’d get the not.”
You will NOT get…not. God says YES. A thousand times, yes! I am here! I will part the Red Sea for you. You need just to stay still and trust me.
I know it’s scary.
But you do not need to be the strongest one in the room. You have a breacher.
Expect Him. He will not disappoint.
Not because you deserve it, not because you work for it, but just Because. He. Loves. You.
Full stop. End of story.
