“I’m not afraid,” she said. “I saw the future when I was reading the scrolls. We’re going to be OK, big guy. We’re going to live a long and happy life together, and the little peanut will be fine.”
Samuel breathed. “Free will could change all that.”
Ada laughed and placed a kiss on his jaw.
“We can discuss all of that while we’re traveling, right? Let’s get the hell outta Dodge, big guy.”
Chapter Thirty-One
Ada
She would never forget the terrible sound of rushing wind from above as the angel army descended, intent on bringing her lover to justice. Likewise, she would never forget the sound of writhing demonic spirits coming up from the depths of the portal to hell.
“Where will we go?” Ada asked as they flew. “Now that heaven and hell are both against us.”
“All of your questions will be answered in their time,” he said.
“When?” she asked.
“When they happen.”
She huffed, but she was having a hard time maintaining her persistence, her obstinance, when she was flying, her arms and legs clinging for dear life to this fierce flying creature, no seatbelts, no harnesses, no helmets. “You can’t expect me to be satisfied with that answer. The world is going to end soon. We have so much time to make up for. How are we going to spend it? We have to plan! And we have to plan for the baby!”
The rush of the wind drowned out her questions, and she took a moment to absorb the fact that she was flying. Fucking flying without engines or a pilot or a hundred tons of metal surrounding her.
Samuel sailed them over mountains and glittering water. Cars sat at intersections, waiting for traffic lights to turn green. Patchworks of terraced farmland waiting for their crops to grow. Little did any of them know the end was nigh.
“The truth is, the world may come to an end in our lifetime, little fox. But I have a strong feeling we will have more tales to tell, even after the end,” Samuel said.
Her man was smart. And oddly happy, she could feel it. And so was she. What do I call this? Her husband? Boyfriend? Partner? Could an angel, or half-angel, belong to her in the same way that regular humans claimed each other?
As they gained altitude and the air became thinner, the lush green folded mountains that pulled her in when her life began, that wrapped her up with the illusion of safety and home, soon faded into the distance. Ahead of her was only sky and other mountains to explore, more rivers leading to seas and cities full of mysteries she had not yet experienced. Creatures to meet. More phenomena to be tested and specimens to experiment with.
And then she knew what to call this, this thing that made her feel a little less like she was missing something.
She reached up and kissed his neck and felt the faintest hint of a growl emanate from his chest into her frame.
This was a family. Her forever family.
