  Chapter 1

  Belle

I glanced up at the bright windows of the buildings around me, studying the way the structures rose and fell like the ancient cities of Rome. Some of them were still being built, some were being renovated, and some didn't even exist yet, empty lots boasting signs of the new attractions to come. It was a city of life and feverish growth—the perfect place for a young, budding entrepreneur like myself.

I sighed and stepped up on the curb. A luxurious hotel sat before me with golden structures rising high into the sky and glass doors that could have very well been made out of crystal. The place was bustling with life, more than I had ever seen, and I wasn't sure if I would really make it inside in time for the blind date that I had set up.

That's right—this was desperation. It was the last stretch effort. I hadn't met many great men in my life. Most of them were interested in taking my virginity instead of offering me comfort or security, the two things I wanted more in this world than buttered biscuits. I was just taking a chance here in this city, a new start, just like anyone else who might want change, right?

San Francisco, please, be good to me, I begged of the great, monstrous structures around me. Let this time be good.

As I pressed forward, I tucked my purple clutch under my arm and fixed my black dress. It was the perfect mixture of professional meets sassy and seductive—or at least that's what all the Vogue magazines said. I wasn't much for fashion. Cooking was my Kryptonite, in a good way, the way that really got my engines revved up. I prayed silently that this guy was a chef or at least part of the restaurant business.

If we didn't have food in common, what the hell else was there?

While giggling under my breath, I pushed through the revolving glass doors and entered a grand room with a polished front desk and a number of people moving about. Bellhops rolled luggage carts around the room and hustled them into elevators as people grabbed their children, grabbed their husbands, or grabbed their bags.

  I was overwhelmed.

Why the hell would a blind date service book people here? I stared down at my glossy black heels, hoping that my toes wouldn't get too cramped up before dessert. If I had to sit here and listen to a guy rattle on about his independent internet business like the last time, I might as well kick them off.

Don't count your eggs before they hatch.

Squaring my shoulders and leveling my gaze, I put on my best grin and followed the black signs with gold letters that pointed in the direction of the restaurant, Chateau Ortega. As soon as I walked through the golden doors, I was overwhelmed by the delightful smell of high-end cooking. It was like I could pluck the spices right out of the air as the smells wafted under my nostrils. For a moment, I was caught in Heaven and even stared in the direction of the kitchen, recognizing each dish by its smell before it even came out.

  “Table for one?”

I focused with a look of confusion on the host in front of me. He wore a finely tailored suit complete with white cloth gloves. Most fancy restaurants in hotels did this sort of presentation as if it increased their business. (Pro tip: it totally works.) But I always regarded the uniforms with a bit of distaste. If the waiters were uncomfortable, then the customers would surely pick up on that. I couldn't do that to my workers even though I was only in the catering business.

“Actually, I'm meeting someone,” I chimed happily. “Elijah.”

The host happily grabbed two menus and led me to a small, round table towards the corner of the restaurant. As he held out my chair, I thanked him and accepted the menu when I was seated. I sent him off to grab me a water before noticing the placard sitting in the center of the table. It was a matted card with embossed letters displaying our names: Belle and Elijah.

I flushed as I held up the card, realizing they probably did this all the time. At least they were professional about it. So far, no one was staring.

While I set my clutch on the table, I took a deep breath and tried to exude confidence. I withdrew my hand held mirror and touched up my gloss, tapping my lips delicately just in case someone was watching. And while I had the mirror aimed at my shadowy eyes to check my eyeliner, I just happened to get a glance of the most handsome man I think I'd ever seen in my life—right behind me.

I gasped and dropped the mirror. “Oh!”

“My apologies, ma'am. I have that effect on people.”

I blushed as I swung around in my chair. “You must be--”

“I am.” He smiled wide, showing off his pearly white teeth. “Don't get up. I'll get my chair myself.”

  I giggled.

“Belle, I presume—you look absolutely amazing. Nothing like your description.”

“I didn't—I didn't realize anyone really read the description.”

“I like to know what to expect.”

  “Oh, well, that's odd.”

He raised a curious brow. “How so?”

“It's odd considering you threw the dice on a blind date.”

He chuckled and flashed his dashing smile, practically causing me to swoon. I mean, I couldn't stop checking him out. He had chocolate brown eyes that flashed honey whenever the light from the windows fell over them. His features were symmetrical with thick brows above his eyes and sandy brown hair that fell to his dimpled chin on one side while smoothed behind his ear on the other.

I was overwhelmed suddenly with my decision—a blind date in the middle of the hottest hotel in San Francisco with a guy this hot?

I think I'd lost my mind.

“You're...not like your description either,” I added. “I read that you're in business. Just what business exactly would that be?”

  “You're curious. I like that.”

“I like to know what I'm getting into.”

“Said the girl who booked a blind date.”

I grinned playfully. “Funny and mysterious—that's cute.”

  I leaned against the table.

“So, what business are you in, Miss Belle?”

“I run a catering business—or, at least, I used to. It tanked about a month ago. I've been scrambling to get it back up off the ground.”

He frowned sympathetically. “I'm sorry to hear that. I can't imagine how food wouldn't get along well in this great city.” He gestured as if we were in the center hub of San Francisco. “Though I can empathize with that. I recently had a few business ventures go off the deep end.”

  “And what business is that?”

Please, don't say computers. Please, don't say computers. Anything but computers!

He grinned wide. “Luxury and comfort suites.”

  “Like hotels?”

  He nodded.

I grinned. “How many do you own?”

“Quite a few, actually. I've been investing all over the country. Lately, I've been interested in going overseas, but the world may not be ready for me yet.”

  I giggled. “I can't imagine why. You're rather dashing.”

  “Am I, now?”

I flushed as the waiter approached the table. God, had he heard our exchange? Surely he heard this sort of thing all the time, but I didn't even want to imagine how many times.

“Your water, ma'am,” the waiter said. “And for you, sir?”

“A vodka tonic and a martini for the lady,” he replied.

As the waiter went off, I locked eyes with Elijah. “Quite bold of you to assume I like martinis.”

“You seem like the type. Independent business owner with a dash of sexy—yes, definitely a martini sort of girl.”

I snickered. “I would have taken you more for a whiskey type.”

“I have my days.” He winked. “So, tell me more about your catering business.”

  “You mean the nonexistent business?”

He motioned for me to go on.

I sighed. “Well, it used to be rather lucrative. I was hired by plenty of gala events, mostly the runway fashion shows that were held downtown. I had a little head-butting match with another catering place—Soto Sinclair—and she knocked me right off my rocker.”

  “How dare she.”

“You jest, but it was a huge blow to my pride.”

“Who needs pride anyway? Lust is more fun.”

  ...And it begins.

I tried not to let my features shift, but I think he noticed the slightest twitch of my left eye.

“What do you like preparing for your events? What's your favorite dish?” he inquired.

I went quiet for a moment as I let my eyes wander down from his eyes. Though they were a rather captivating golden brown, I couldn't help lingering around his neck. His shoulders were broad, hidden by a professional button-down shirt a shade of pastel blue. The top button was undone and revealed a little tuft of hair likely surrounded by incredibly chiseled muscles. His suit jacket was a navy blue, dark and rich like my favorite chocolate drizzled on a pastry.

I shook myself out of my daze. “Guava and cheese pastries.”

He hummed, and his grin widened. "Why?"

"Because they're simple and sweet. They're not complicated to make—at least, not for me—and I love the outcome: a crisp outer shell with a delicious, creamy filling."

“Is that what you're made of?”

I blushed so hard that I think I might have matched the color of my nails. “Oh, stop.”

“My apologies—it's just cute when you blush like that.”

  “You're really too much.”

“Ah, well, good thing we found each other by chance, right?”

The waiter returned with our drinks and inquired about appetizers, causing my stomach to gurgle violently. I hoped they hadn't heard it.

Elijah had paused to allow me time to respond. I eyed him curiously, wondering if it was a trick. The first time, he had ordered for me, but now he was allowing me space. I couldn't get a pin in this guy—couldn't figure him out. Was he dominant or was he gentle?

I returned my attention to the waiter and smiled while ordering us a plate of Jalapeño biscuits with honey on the side. Elijah raised his eyebrows, clearly interested in my choice.

“Is that too spicy for you?” I teased.

“Not at all. I like a challenge.”

As I giggled shyly, I heard a set of footsteps approaching our table. I thought it was the waiter, but it was another handsome and stylishly dressed man, a little taller than Elijah and wearing a rather playful grin.

“Playing games again, I see,” he stated.

I looked between him and Elijah. “Do you two know each other?”

The man smiled warmly. "Oh, Belle—it is nice to meet you finally. You're so much like your description."

I furrowed my brows together. “Is this a joke?”

“Not at all. Allow me to introduce myself—my name is Elijah. I had originally set up our blind date. My friend here is Arthur. He's a bit of a joker.”

  “I don't understand,” I croaked.

I stood up quickly from my chair and took a step back. I hadn't even had a sip of my martini, and I was seeing double-double the handsome and double the joke. Were these guys in on some sick bet or what?

“I thought he was Elijah,” I said as I pointed to the man announced as Arthur. “I don't get it. Are you two pulling my leg?”

“Not at all, my dear. It was a simple mix-up,” claimed the man who had announced himself as Elijah.

I held my head. “I'm so confused.”

Arthur stood up from his chair. “I didn't mean any harm. I was just interested in seeing who you were and if you were a good match.”

“So, you were posing as your friend?”

He shook his head. “No—actually, I was seeing if you were a match for us.”

I gaped at him for a moment, unsure of what to say. After a brief pause, I started laughing, a deep and guttural laugh from my belly that made me swing around on my heel and laugh my way out of the restaurant. As soon as I was outside on the sidewalk, I shook my head and continued giggling as I climbed into my white Sedan.

“God,” I groaned. “What a fucking city.”

  Chapter 2

  Arthur

She was such a sight to behold. I wanted to keep her across the table from me for as long as possible without interruption just so I could study the way her creamy skin looked in the synthetic light of the restaurant. Her eyes were sapphire blue, a contrast to the surrounding dull colors. I could have gotten lost in them—I wanted to.

And that smell...dear God, she smelled like jasmine with a little hint of vanilla. The enchanting scent danced across the table and invaded my nostrils, filling me with even more desire than before. I had seen her professional photographs on her catering website, but here she was looking like an absolute angel.

She was more than that; she was angelic fire shooting down from heaven to strike me.

Every move she made was deliberate and smooth, a confident gesture from an independent woman. I liked that about her. She had long blond hair that was tucked up into a professional bun with one little ringlet dyed blue hanging down next to her right eye. It was the perfect mixture of professional meets daringly sexy—and God, was I hooked.

Her shoulders were small, sensual, and perfectly aligned with her posture. She knew how to sit. She knew how to act. Everything about her was alluring and decadent like the finest and richest red wine I had ever tasted. What did she taste like? I just had to know.

When her eyes wandered elsewhere, I took the opportunity to reciprocate the motion. I let my eyes trickle down to her bosom that was modestly covered by a black dress with a sheer collar. I could see her shoulders beneath but could see nothing more. That mere tease was enough to cause me to shift my legs, placing one over the other to control my arousal.

I wondered if she felt the same.

But this exchange didn't last for long. Elijah interrupted be
fore I could gently break in the idea to her and she had taken off laughing. Now I was left at the table with my best friend and a strong feeling in my gut that we were about to miss out on the most elegant woman in San Francisco.

  Son of a bitch.

I snatched my napkin from my lap and tossed it on the table, studying Belle's backside as she shimmied away, laughter filling the restaurant. The patrons at the table beside us turned curiously, but I didn't mind them. I didn't mind being the fool.

  For now.

  “That went well,” Elijah commented.

“Did you have to interrupt us? I was hooking her in so nicely,” I retorted.

He chuckled. “Oh, come now, Arthur. She had to meet us both at some point.”

“Sure, but not before you scared her off.”

“You're the one who mentioned she would be for us both.”

“I...” I faded, adjusting the waistband of my pants. “Whatever—I guess we're done here.”

“No, sit down. Let's finish our drink and regroup.”

Elijah took Belle's seat and eyed her martini that she had left behind. After moving it aside, he folded his hands on the white table cloth and focused on me.

“What do you propose we do now?” I asked as I raised my drink to my lips.

“She's tough, but maybe we can sway her.”

“And how would we do that?”

“What did she tell you while you were chatting?”

I cocked my head, remembering the sweet and alluring scent of her jasmine perfume. "She mentioned that she had a catering business that had recently sunk into the sea—lost it."
