Silent Money

‘Very generous, Dick. And my money stays offshore, in the most secure haven we’ve got.’ He stood up and shook Dick’s hand. ‘It’s been good working with you. And the best is still to come.’

That was the last time Dick and Michael met face to face. At bank board meetings, Michael always provided some perceptive insight on laundering, usually based on one of the techniques that Dick’s operation had stopped using. The banks were praised for leading the fight against corruption and laundering, and Michael was building his reputation as the person behind it all. There was even talk of an honour in recognition of his contribution to financial regulation. And with a steady accumulation of funds in a secret offshore account from an ever-grateful Dick, he could fund his every extravagance at Glensporret House. As the estate became more opulent and magnificent, it became more and more sought after by the world’s elite. To stay in the main building, you had to be invited by Michael himself, and you had to pay for the privilege.

What Kenny McGowan had said all those years ago had proved to be right. It was the consequences of your actions that defined whether they were moral or not – not the actions themselves. By that measure, Michael had succeeded in what he set out to achieve. He’d battled against the world and won by playing according to a different moral code.

But what he didn’t know, didn’t even suspect, was that all of this would soon come crashing down.

  Thank you!

This is not the end of Michael’s story. Silent Money is the prequel to Love’s Long Road. That book is also set in the 1970s and tells the story of Roberta or ‘Bobbie’, Michael’s one-time lover. Read it and find out why she was alone on that fateful night she met Michael at Tiffany’s; what happened to her in London; and how she still has a part to play in the next chapter of Michael’s life.

The third part of this trilogy is A Friend in Deed, set over forty years later in a near-future Britain, again told from the viewpoint of a character from the first two books, this time Duncan, Roberta’s best friend.
