The Summer of Kim Novak

“That book you’re writing?” Ewa asked, caressing my stomach. “How’s it going?”
“Well enough,” I answered. “It’s coming along.”
After laying like that a while, she said: “I’ve always wondered something.”
“Oh?” I said. “What?”
“Who actually killed Berra? You or Edmund? It had to be one of you.”
I turned around and buried my face between her breasts.
“Truer words were never spoken,” I said. “It had to have been one of us.”
And then I told her who.
“What?” said Ewa. “I can’t hear what you’re saying when you speak straight into my body like that.”
I breathed in her scent and then that cloud unfurled inside me. Funny how some clouds linger.

On the Design
As book design is an integral part of the reading experience, we would like to acknowledge the work of those who shaped the form in which the story is housed.
Tessa van der Waals (Netherlands) is responsible for the cover design, cover typography, and art direction of all World Editions books. She works in the internationally renowned tradition of Dutch Design. Her bright and powerful visual aesthetic maintains a harmony between image and typography and captures the unique atmosphere of each book. She works closely with internationally celebrated photographers, artists, and letter designers. Her work has frequently been awarded prizes for Best Dutch Book Design.
The cover photograph was taken by Carl Brandt, a copywriter and graphic designer based in Germany, who also has a passion for film and photography. In his own words: “During my childhood, my family used to spend the holidays together in Sweden. However, being very young at the time, my own memories of those days are based more on pictures than on real memories. When my first child was born I took parental leave and we went on a trip of a lifetime discovering Sweden in a van and I let my old memories come alive. This shot was taken at a peaceful lake in the middle of Småland. It is symbolic of our trip: in places like this we found the freedom we were looking for.”
The cover has been edited by lithographer Bert van der Horst of BFC Graphics (Netherlands).
