Chapter One
Nadia Russell
I don’t like snow. I will say that. It can stay away for all I care. One thing I wasn’t expecting was to be put up in a hotel room with three other women.
I was supposed to go and see this woman, one that I met on an on-line dating app. I don’t think that’s going to happen.
I try to message her but with the storm that’s coming in it seems like all cell towers are down; I wonder if she’s wondering where I am yet.
Yes, I’m into women. I don’t like men. I guess it’s because of the way I’ve seen my mother be treated by them.
Mother had plenty of boyfriends, men coming and going and every single one of them didn’t know how to respect her.
I told myself at a young age that I wasn’t going to be like her and I’m not.
I’m twenty-four and willing to take whatever the world dishes out to me. I am going to make it in this world either by myself or with someone by my side.
I’m not too worried about living life on my own. Proving myself time and again because of my mother and the life that she led.
“I don’t think that we’re going to get out of here any time soon.” I hear a voice behind me.
She’s looking out the window. I think what attracted me to her the most is that she had pink spiked hair. When she turns away from the window, I see her green eyes that are amazing and for just a second I stare.
“What?” She glares at me.
“Nothing.” I shake my head and a slow grin appears on my face.
“Where you headed?” She asks me.
“I was supposed to go to Vegas. You?” I nod my head.
“Colorado.” She states.
“What’s your name?” I try to make it sound like it doesn’t matter either way, but I like to meet people. I like to remember things.
“Vicky Masterson.” She doesn’t look like a Vicky, but I will take it for an answer.
“Nadia Russell.” I give her mine.
“I don’t remember asking for your name.” Vicky tells me, but then there’s a small smirk of her own and I know that she’s only playing.
“I heard earlier that we may be grounded right here in Rhode Island. I don’t think that we’re going to be moving anywhere fast.” Another woman is sitting on a bed, flipping through her phone.
“I don’t have the money to keep spending on a hotel room.” Vicky tells us.
Her pink lipstick is pale, and fading, it still looks good. It matches her hair.
Her white tank top is tight, she hardly has any breasts and she’s wearing a green pair of army pants. Boots to keep her feet warm.
It’s hot in the room but looking outside I guess I’m happy to be here.
“I don’t think that they can ask you to pay for the hotel. Not when it’s not our fault.” I try to reassure her.
“Let’s hope not. Besides, I hope that they give us different room arrangements. How many women are in here, ten?” She scans the room quickly.
I count them in my head.
She’s right.
Ten.
I don’t complain because I haven’t spent a dime on the room. There are a lot of cots, two beds and it’s hard to move around.
From an outsider’s point of view, I would say that it looks more like a shelter than anything else.
“You have to remember it was hard for them to come up with a room.” The woman on the bed tells us.
Though she’s really not talking to me. She’s giving Vicky a dirty look.
“I don’t remember asking you.” Vicky glares at her.
I can see that she knows how to hold her own.
“Come on, let’s get breakfast.” I tell her, not wanting to cause a scene right there in such a small room.
I can imagine a brawl breaking out. Too many people and I don’t know any of them. I don’t know who can fight and who can’t. The last thing we need is something to go horribly wrong.
Vicky looks at me as if she’s thinking about it. I chew on my bottom lip before she nods her head and leads the way out of the room.
“Are you a fighter?” I can’t believe I let the words come out of my mouth.
“No, I don’t like fighting. I do everything I can to avoid it, but I don’t let anyone think that I’m a pushover either.” She points a finger at me.
“Who were you supposed to visit?” I ask her, hoping that we can change the subject.
“My father. I haven’t seen him in a few years. I just want to see if he’s changed like he says he has. How about you?” She raises one eyebrow.
I blush a little, I feel my heartbeat quicken.
No one is really supposed to know. Not even mother knows, but it’s not like Vicky’s a big part of my life.
Telling her would be different. I doubt I will ever see her again.
“I was going to Vegas to meet up with a woman that I met online.” I clear my throat and conti
nue looking directly down the hallway.
“Cool.” Vicky’s one worded answer makes me laugh a little.
“What?” She’s not getting it, giving me a confused look.
“I’m not laughing at you. It’s just not something I would expect to come out of another’s mouth.” I tell her.
“Then you’ve been hanging out with the wrong people all your life.” Vicky tells me, grinning from ear to ear.
She doesn’t know it, but it rang the truth. I couldn’t go to my mother about the type of person I want to fall in love with. I can’t go to my father, I don’t even know who he is, it could be a number of men.
I’m an only child. No one that I can really confide in.
“I dated a woman once.” Vicky tells me.
“Yeah?” I’m a little surprised because even though she looks like the type that would be interested in other women I know that looks can be deceiving.
“I guess it was all right. I mean the sex was good. The short time I was with her, not so good. It was like she had to up me one, you know. Like everything I’ve done she’s done it. If I had a bad memory, she had one that was worse. If I said that I jumped out of a plane, she would say that she was pushed out of one and the list goes on.” She explains to me.
The attitude that I saw before is gone. It’s just the two of us talking and it feels good. There’s nothing to hide when a person doesn’t know you and you don’t know them. You don’t have to pretend that you’re something you’re not. Most times you don’t have to make a good impression.
We go into the hotel cafeteria and grab some food. I get a bagel and cream cheese. She gets a box of cereal and some milk with a bowl.
There aren’t many options to choose from. I find us a round table in the corner of the room. The only one that’s still available.
“Don’t like crowds?” Vicky asks me, sitting beside me.
There are only two chairs at the table, the rest are taken for others to sit down and join friends or the party that they’ve come with for the next flight.
“Yeah, I’ve never been the type to enjoy large crowds.” I feel myself growing sick, the blood leaving my face.
“I think we can find a quieter place than this.” Vicky whispers to me and she gets up from the table.
I get up with the tray that I have and follow her out. I feel a little better knowing that I am out of the noise.
I don’t ask her where we’re going, I just follow her.
She leads me into the bathroom and locks the door putting her tray down on the counter I do the same.
“Better?” She grins at me.
I nod my head and wipe the sweat from my face. A cold sweat to say the least. I feel much better actually.
“Panic attack.” Vicky tells me without even questioning it.
“Yes, I deal with them from time to time. I’ve never been on a plane, like this is the first time. I didn’t think that it would be this hard.” I confess, eating my bagel as soon as I lather on the cream cheese.
“So why travel so far for some woman? I mean, have you guys met? Do you know what she looks like? Has she been keeping in touch with you?” Vicky has a million questions now that we’re getting to know each other.
“We’ve never met. I am sure that she’s messaged me a few times, but my phones been out. I keep checking it. I know it’s the storm. We talk over chat and video but no, we don’t really know each other.” I shake my head.
“Then why put yourself through all this stress? Why didn’t you make her come to you?” Vicky has a strange look on her face.
She looks at me as if I’m crazy and I can already tell that she doesn’t know how to hide her facial expressions, either that she doesn’t want to.
“I don’t know. I just thought that since she couldn’t. I would go to her. You know, show her that I’m serious about this.” I blush a little.
“Are you?” Vicky licks her lips before opening her cereal and milk.
“Am I what?” I am already sure that I answered her question.
“Are you serious?” Her eyes grow wider.
“Yes, I think so.” I think about it for a second.
“That means you’re not.” Vicky points a finger at me and shoves a spoonful of cereal into her mouth.
I don’t know how to reply to that. She doesn’t know me.
“If you were serious then you wouldn’t have to think. You would’ve answered just like that.” She snaps her fingers at me.
I see where she’s coming from, but I don’t say anything to her.
“What’s her name?” Vicky continues.
“Corinne.” I smile at her.
“Good looking?” Vicky seems to be wanting a lot of information for a woman that doesn’t care too much about anything.
“I would say so. She has brown hair, blue eyes, a great smile. She’s nice.” I don’t know how to describe her really.
All I know is that she’s nice to me and that’s what matters.
“Have you ever…” Vicky’s voice trails off and I blush a little.
I know exactly what she’s talking about.
It’s not something that I open up about with anyone. I don’t go around admitting that I am into women or what I do.
“Yes. I have.” I grin at her.
“I liked it.” She nods her head as if it’s everyday conversation.
I wonder what kind of life she’s had before now. I don’t want to ask because then I will have to tell her mine.
She looks at me and I’m wondering if she’s checking me out.
She doesn’t say anything and neither do I. I don’t even look directly at her, just out of the corner of my eye.
“Are you a good kisser?” She asks me.
“I don’t know, I haven’t kissed many women.” I throw my head back, laughing at her though my heart is pounding heavily against my chest like it wants to escape.
She puts down her empty bowl and sits cross legged on the counter as if we didn’t just lock the door to keep people out.
Chapter Two
“Sit on the counter with me. If you kiss me, I can tell you if you’re good or not.” Vicky shrugs one shoulder as if it’s not a big deal.
I don’t know how to react to that. I just got done telling her that I was here to meet a woman. The only reason I’m in this restroom right now.
“I don’t know.” I shake my head.
“You’re not married to this woman, are you? I mean you met through the internet. That’s harsh.” She gives me a look.
“We aren’t going out. No.” I answer her.
“Then you’re scared.” She accuses me.
“I’m not scared, what gave you the impression that I’m scared?” I almost yell at her but bite down on my lip to control myself.
“Well, you’re not doing it.” She shakes her head.
I laugh a little and can’t believe what I’m doing as I climb up onto the counter to sit closer to her. Crossing my legs just like her and facing her.
“There, see it’s not that bad.” She looks down at the floor.
It’s a little high off the ground, that’s not what I’m worried about.
We stare at each other I lick my lips to wet them and feel my hands getting sweaty. I’ve only been with two other women in my life.
“It’s just a kiss.” She rolls her eyes at me.
I giggle a little and before I know it her lips are pressed against mine. I close my eyes slowly and part my lips just a little so that she can enter my mouth.
Vicky does it slowly, I think back to the first few hours that we met this morning and how I wondered if she was into females.
I find myself kissing her back and even though she doesn’t make any noises I don’t either though I rather enjoy the kiss. How soft her lips are, the way her tongue licks and teases mine.
Vicky pulls away before we really get into it.
There’s a smile on her face at least that’s a good sign.
“Well?” I ask he
r.
“It was all right.” She shrugs her shoulders and I can see the sparkle in her eyes. I laugh at her and shake my head.
“Nah, it was good. I’ve had better and I’ve had worse.” I can tell that she’s being honest because she looks full on into my eyes.
“So, you wouldn’t do it again?” I ask her.
“I didn’t say that.” She shakes her head.
I wonder if I am a bad kisser. I don’t want to sit here and think that the woman that I’m meeting is going to think I suck at it.
I don’t even know what’s going on with that anymore. Not with the storm that continues to rage on.
Vicky leans in for another kiss and before I can tell her no there’s a knock on the bathroom door. Vicky spins and within seconds she’s on the floor and heading for the restroom door.
Unlocking it she lets two women into the bathroom as I hop down off the counter.
“Are you supposed to be doing that?” The red head woman looks at me.
“Well are you supposed to be talking to strangers?” Vicky asks them without missing a beat and I feel my face growing red.
They don’t say anything to her as they enter different stalls and we take care of our breakfast trash and bring the tray back to the cafeteria.
The only one in the room is the janitor cleaning up everyone’s mess. We help without even offering, clearing off the tables and tossing things into the trash.
The janitor nods his head at us and gives us a thankful smile.
“That was my good deed for the day.” Vicky warns me as if I’m the one who told her she had to do it.
“All right.” I laugh at her.
“Just so that we’re clear. I mean as it is, I’m not liking the fact that we must go back to the hotel room and deal with those other women. That’s a lot in one room.” Vicky groans.
I think about it for a few minutes and when we are about to enter the room, I put a hand on her shoulder and pull her away from it.
I can’t believe what I’m about to say.
“Hey.” She glares at me.
