  “Well, that didn’t work out to well for him,” Trina said sarcastically.

  “It did and it didn’t,” I rebutted.

  Trina found my hand under the table and gave it a squeeze.

  “As for Paul,” Jack continued. “The stoolie believed that Paul didn’t know what he would be doing. Apparently, Greg convinced Paul that he could make a lot of money freelancing as security for a charity auction. Greg provided the weapon and directed Paul to position himself in the back.” Jack laid the report back on the table. “I can’t say that we have proof positive, but eye-witness accounts tell us that Paul only fired at the ceiling, and—”

  “And he was killed due to friendly fire,” Mathison said, cutting Jack off. “If that turns out to be the case, I will do my utmost to see that his wife receives his benefits.”

  Trina turned and looked at me with glistening eyes and a broad smile on her lips.

  I took her hand with both of mine and squeezed it lovingly.

  “I owe you an apology, Katherine. And you as well, Trina. It looks like I was wrong about Paul.”

  “Damn straight you were,” Trina chastised.

  Mathison held her hand up to quiet Trina, then turned to Jack. “Thank you, Jack. On behalf of Detective Wiles and myself, we accept your apology.”

  “Most gracious of you,” Jack said, nodding at Trina, who showed no emotion. “Ruby, I’m please to tell you that your psych eval has been approved and you may report back for duty in the morning. However, with Captain Mathison’s approval, I would like to propose another task force between our respected agencies.”

  “I would love that, Jack,” I chirped, cherishing the idea of working with my lover. “But I think I need to stay away from undercover work for a bit if that’s permissible?”

  “Perfectly understandable,” Jack replied. “Trina, any objections?”

  “None. Ruby and I make a very good team. Captain, what do you think?”

  I held my breath, waiting, hoping, and praying that she would say yes. Trina shook my hand as she also held her breath. All eyes were on Mathison.

  Mathison didn’t hesitate. “HPD stands ready to assist the FBI as needed. Just don’t forget that she’s my detective, Jack.”

  He smiled and gave a sharp nod. “Then it’s settle.”

  Trina leaned over whispered in my ear. I looked up into her blue-green eyes swirling with mischievousness and nodded wholeheartedly. She stood up and looked at Jack. “Good. Now if you will excuse us. We have to be somewhere.”

  “Yes,” I agreed, the celebration already heating up between my thighs. “It’s a… um… last minute appointment.”
