Marilyn lay at home, unaware of what was happening. She sat up and snapped at the nurse occasionally. She needed to keep her dignity intact and mustered enough strength to visit the bathroom and walk back. She refused the brand new walker provided for her.
Still not receptive to Brett’s presence, she turned her face when he walked in. He didn’t care he would tell her anyway. “We found a donor!” Mom we have a donor!”
The once cold and limp woman sprang to life. “Are you serious Brett? Am I going to live?”
“Yes mother, you are going to live.”
For the first time in forever Brett watched his mother cry. Marilyn wept uncontrollably until the nurse gave her pain medication with a touch of sedative. Slowly as she drifted off to sleep, she relaxed. As dreamland beckoned her, a smile like none he had ever seen before settled on her usually downturned lips. His mother was going to live.

As it turns out the wedding colors were orange and white. The hall decorated for a wedding and reception in one, glistened with crystals dripping from the ceilings and tea lights dancing on the transparent tops of the table centerpieces. The cake towered three feet high with more decorations than he could identify. Flowers climbed the side of the tiers and crystals shone between the leaves of the ivory cake.
He waited at the front for her, the best man, Coggins beamed at the fact that he could represent his old friend at his son’s wedding. Guests gathered on either side of the aisle to watch the wedding of Natalie Johnson and Brett Haughton. The wedding march started and Brett wasn’t sure if he should look around. There was no need. A loud little girl said “Daddy!” And ran down the aisle forgetting the flower petals in her basket she had practiced throwing.
Scooping Joy up much to the delight of the watching crowd, he kissed her as she swung her small arms around his neck. The audience silenced and heads began to turn to see the real star of the evening.
Natalie was the most beautiful bride this wedding hall had ever seen. Cameras flashed from the terrace next to the pool where photographers stood for the best vantage point. She wore white. The dress, floor length and mermaid, had been custom made by an Italian designer, whose name Brett couldn’t pronounce. Her bare shoulders shone in the light and Brett knew her infamous lotion had been painstakingly rubbed on her skin.
The makeup artist couldn’t have done much because Natalie’s skin always looked radiant and polished. Anything they added could only accentuate her already stellar features. The bouquet, a mix of oranges and lilacs, laid reverently in her hand as she finally joined him at the altar. Joy quickly went off with her nanny to sit behind her mom and dad.
The priest was loud and the African American choir rousing as they sang renditions unfamiliar to many in the crowd but it was enjoyable none the less. When father McKinnon pronounced them man and wife, there was no need to tell Brett to kiss his bronze bride. He sprang forward much to the amusement of the now cheering crowd.
Brett looked longingly at the empty seat he had reserved for his mother knowing full well she was too ill to come and sorrowfully, she still didn’t approve of their union. The transplant had taken and she was in recovery mode. The risk of infection was high the doctor said.
Natalie’s parents sat with members of her small family. Her father’s chest puffed with pride at the sight of his daughter, and her graceful mother shed a few tears of joy. The baby went back and forth freely between the nanny and her Nanna. The entire scene was picture perfect. Of course they were shocked to meet Brett as she intentionally didn’t tell them about the race difference or his financial status. Neither mattered to the Johnsons. After the coals Jason had dragged their daughter through, they were just thrilled a man had finally seen her for the precious soul she was. Any material thing he could give her paled in comparison to decent treatment and love. Brett willingly gave both.
It was time for the toasts and Coggins made them laugh with ball and chain jokes. The final toast was being raised by Brett’s college friend when a messenger crept inside and handed the attorney a note. He waited for the toast to end before standing again
“Excuse me if you will folks, but I just received a toast from a guest who couldn’t be here. Brett, Mrs. Haughton, do you mind?” Brett shook his head curiously and urged him to go on.
“This note is from someone close to the family and it reads, ‘As I lay on my bed recovering from what must have been the most terrible ordeal in my entire adult life, I must admit how embarrassed I am. I have overlooked and insulted people over the course of time that didn’t deserve it. Most recently it happened to be Natalie and my granddaughter Joy. They thought I would never find out, Brett certainly didn’t tell me, that it was my now daughter- in -laws unselfish act that has kept me alive today. Thank you for allowing Joy to give me life. Thank you little Joy for giving me your life blood, even when I was so cruel as to reject your innocent love. You are a precious angel and it is I who should learn to be more like you. I was raised in a time when things like this were not acceptable, but as an adult I chose to perpetuate all that I had been taught. I see now, how foolish and utterly ridiculous my behavior was and I hope we can get to know each other once I’m out of this damn bed. This is a letter from a sick old woman who raised a boy smart enough to be color blind. I am proud of his blindness.”
Coggins the attorney folded the paper and sat down with a tear in his eye. As a matter of fact, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house by the time he was finished. As the emotional man returned to his chair, Brett looked at his wife and whispered, “After pain comes Joy.”
