“Never mind. Anyway, let’s keep going. It looks like Kureha can sense something up ahead.”

Indeed, Kureha was staring deeper into the room, so they began moving again. As they walked, the area up ahead came into view. It looked like there was a large door guarded by two statues that were even bigger than the one he had just been looking at. While the [guardian statues] were maybe a head taller than him, these ones stood at twice his height. They wore what looked like heavy armor and wielded halberds that were at least six meters tall. A single blue crystal could be seen in the center of each stone statue.

“So… another [guardian statue]?” asked Adam.

“These ones are [knight golems],” Titania corrected him. “They are far more formidable than the [guardian statues].”

Because she knew what Adam would want, Titania cast [scan] on the [knight golem].

“I’m guessing we have to defeat all the [guardian statues] and these two [knight golems] in order to proceed, right?” Adam asked.

“I believe that is most likely to be the case,” Titania agreed.

At that moment, a soft rumbling filled the air. Adam turned around when the sound of footsteps echoed around him. A [guardian statue] had come to life and was now walking toward him with ponderous steps that caused the ground to shake.

Kureha charged in front of Adam and growled at the moving statue, but Adam didn’t think growling would help here, so he stepped in front instead.

“Kureha, attack this thing with [Fireball] and [Thunder Bolt]. I want to see how much damage they do,” he said.

With a yip, Kureha raised one of her tails and pointed it at the [guardian statue]. A bright ball of blue lightning crackled to life along the tip of her tail. It was only there for a split second before the sphere turned into a bolt that shot forward and struck the [guardian statue] in the chest.

  -825!

It didn’t do much damage, but Adam didn’t expect it to since Kureha was only at level 1. Shaving off -825 of its health was already shocking enough. He could not even do -100 damage when he was at her level.

The statue lumbered on. It was still moving slowly, so Adam didn’t actually feel a sense of danger. He just stood there as heat flared to life around Kureha’s other tail. A fireball soon appeared above the tip, but it was soon launched at the [guardian statue], slamming into the statue’s head and exploding.

  -600!

“It looks like [Thunder Bolt] does more damage,” Adam observed. “Kureha, use [Thunder Bolt] whenever you have the opportunity to do so. Titania, you know what to do.”

“I shall back you up,” Titania confirmed as she flew above his head and began to sing [Song of Vigor].

Adam activated [Blood Sacrifice], dropping the health he had by half in exchange for 300% damage for 60 seconds. He quickly charged forward and attacked the [guardian statue] with a continuous stream of seemingly never ending stabs and slashes.

  -7,488; MISS!

  -7,488; MISS!

Adam realized only after trying to use it twice that [Dance of the Sakura Blossoms] was a lot harder to activate than he initially gave credit for. His attacks kept missing, which forced him to back off, wait for the cooldown times on both this skill and [Blood Sacrifice] to end, then start them again. He ended up taking a [low-grade health potion] because his health dropped more than he was comfortable with.

Because the skill reset and activated the cooldown time whenever he missed, he only managed to do -17,000 damage. Of course, this thing didn’t have more than +25,000 health. One more attack would finish it, but [Blood Sacrifice] had worn off while he was waiting for [Dance of the Sakura Blossoms’s] second cooldown time to end, meaning the amount of damage he did was lessened.

  -2,475!

Kureha yipped and released another [Thunder Bolt], which slammed into the [guardian statue] with unparalleled ferocity. The statue stumbled back several steps. Adam took advantage of its sudden stumble to rush in and swing his spear around in a simple [slash].

  -4,320!

That was all the damage Adam needed to inflict to kill this thing. The [guardian statue] stopped moving after its HP dropped to zero, cracks appeared along its body, and then it crumbled away, turning into a pile of rubble.

Adam could only blink as Kureha’s level shot up. Of course, he had expected this since she was at level 1 and the [guardian statue] gave +11,000 experience points. She ended up gaining a whole 5 levels, going from level 1 all the way to level 6. Like Titania, she also gained +10 status points per level gained. Unlike with Titania, Kureha seemed incapable of allocating her own status points because she was classified as a pet. That being the case, Adam allocated her status points accordingly.

He put +30 of her SP in Intelligence, +10 in Constitution, and another +10 in speed. Once done, he looked at her status screen.

Just as Adam finished allocating Kureha’s status points, another rumbling sound echoed around them. Adam looked toward his left and saw another [guardian statue] come to life. It walked off the small stand, moving with lumbering steps that caused the ground to shake, and turned to face him, Kureha, and Titania.

“It looks every time we defeat a [guardian statue], another one activates,” Adam said as he spun the spear around in his hands. “I guess I should have expected as much. Well, it’s not like killing these things are very hard.”

The moment those words left his lips, a second [guardian statue] suddenly rumbled to life and stepped off its stand, coming to stand beside the other statue as they both moved toward them. Adam blankly stared at the two statues with a frown. He was certain the vein he felt bulging on his forehead wasn’t his imagination.

“I do believe you jinxed us,” Titania said in a calm yet mocking voice.

“Shut up,” Adam muttered as heat sprang to his cheeks.

Because there were two [guardian statues] now, Adam did not hesitate to let Kureha bombard one of them with [Thunder Bolt], while he activated [Blood Sacrifice] and had Titania sing [Song of Vigor] to increase his attack power. He rushed forward and began [Dance of the Sakura Blossoms] to try and quickly dispose of the first [guardian statue].

  -7,488; -14,976; MISS!

Adam snarled as he missed, thereby resetting [Dance of the Sakura Blossoms] and forcing it to enter a cooldown time. Since he couldn’t use his newest skill, Adam spun the spear around his body and used [slash] to finish off the [guardian statue], then turned around and raced toward the second one.

This [guardian statue] had been moving toward Kureha because she had pulled all of its agro with her magical attacks. [Thunder Bolt] normally did -825 damage, but thanks to Titania’s [Song of Vigor], she did 300% more. She’d only attacked twice, but that had dropped the [guardian statue’s] health by about -5,000 points.

Adam very quickly reached the ponderous enemy and attacked with [slash], which did an astonishing -7,488 points of damage, followed by [slash] two more times. The three simultaneous attacks drew a trio of lines across the [guardian statue’s] body as they dealt a combined total of -22,464 damage. With Kureha already dealing -5,000 damage to it, this was enough to defeat the [guardian statue].

  Ding!

[You have defeated two [guardian statues]! Items dropped: x2 [Guardian Heart] and 10,500 gold coins! +20,000 experience points! +12,000 ability points. +6,000 Reputation!]

[Congratulations! Kureha has leveled up! She is now at level 8! +60 HP! +800 MP! +10 SP!]

Kureha once more leveled up twice, and Adam decided to put all of her status points into her Intelligence stat, bringing it up to +100.

Adam never got the chance to look at how this changed her stats, however, because four of the [guardian statues] began moving next. They were the last four fortunately. However, the fact that Adam had to face four of these giant things before fighting against the two [knight golems] was a little daunting. At the same time, he could not help but grin. His adrenaline was pumping at the thought of combat against these things. They were so slow and ponderous. It was like this game was simply giving him experience points.

  -31,680!

  Ding!

[Congratulations! You have defeated four [guardian statues]! Items dropped: x3 [Guardian Heart] and 46,000 gold coins! +34,000 experience points! +20,000 ability points! +12,000 Reputation!]

  Ding!

[Congratulations! Kureha has leveled up! She is now at level 10! +60 HP! +1,000 MP! +10 SP!]

Adam released a weary sigh as he wiped the sweat from his forehead. Standing over the last of the four [guardian statues] remains, he could only wonder if there might be some kind of bug in this game.

He’d been thinking about this for awhile now, but his stats were kind of broken. His spear still didn’t have very good stats, but he had his two abilities: [Blood Sacrifice] and [Dance of the Sakura Blossoms]. [Blood Sacrifice] halved his HP in exchange for tripling the damage he did for 60 seconds, while [Dance of the Sakura Blossoms] did twice the damage for every consecutive hit, and the damage itself stacked. Granted, he missed a lot when using this attack and the cooldown time was awful, but if he attacked something even four times with [Blood Sacrifice] and Titania’s [Song of Vigor] activated, he could deal over -200,000 points of damage.

That was surely a broken ability if he had ever heard of one.

Speaking of broken abilities, Adam only now realized he had +53,700 ability points and hadn’t once upgraded [Dance of the Sakura Blossoms]. It only took +1,000 ability points to raise his ability to level 2, another +2,000 to raise it to level 3, +4,000 to raise it to level 4, and +8,000 to raise it to level 5. He assumed that was the level cap for [Dance of the Sakura Blossoms] like all his other skills, but then he noticed the status screen did not say his level was maxed out. He added another +16,000 ability points to raise its level to 6. He now had +22,700 ability points, but [Dance of the Sakura Blossoms] sadly required +32,000 ability points to reach the next level.

  Hit-Rate has increased to 60%

  MP Cost: 100

  Cooldown Time: 15-seconds

Everything was maxed out except for [Dance of the Sakura Blossoms], and it looked like his current upgrade had increased the stacking damage it did by 300% and decreased the cooldown time to 15 seconds. He also noticed that his Hit-Rate for this attack had increased to 60%, which was probably the most useful part of this skill since it meant he was likely to score hits more frequently.

Since he was already looking at his stats, he proceeded to add the extra +10 status points that Kureha received from her level up into her Intelligence stat. He figured the higher her Intelligence was, the better she would be in battle.

“That was oddly boring,” Titania mumbled as she fluttered over to him.

“What are you talking about?” asked Adam, stretching his arms above his head as he turned around and began walking toward the [knight golems]. He took a [low-grade health potion] to recover the HP he had lost. Funnily enough, all of his lost HP came from him constantly halving his own health by using [Blood Sacrifice]. Those [guardian statues] had not hit him even once.

“Do not give me that.” Titania sounded cross as she placed her hands on her hips and stared down at him. “Those [guardian statues] were all at level 20, yet you were able to easily dispose of them despite only being at level 11.”

“Well, yeah. What’s the problem?” asked Adam.

Titania rolled her eyes. “The problem is that what you are doing should be impossible. Even adding my own unique enhancement abilities, being able to slay monsters nine levels above you is not something a normal person can do. Just what in the heck are you?”
